Oura has a new ring. Oura Ring 5 was announced on 28 May 2026 and started shipping on 4 June. It costs $399 in Silver or Black and $499 in the other four finishes, and Oura says it is “40% smaller than Oura Ring 4”.123 Oura still sells the Ring 4, from $349, and the Ring 4 Ceramic, and some Ring 4 finishes are on sale today.3
WHOOP has no hardware price; you pay $199 to $359 a year instead: One is $199, Peak $239 and Life $359, with a 12-month commitment.4 So the choice is a ring you buy plus a cheap membership, or a band you lease.
We make SensAI, an AI coaching app for iPhone that reads Apple Health. It isn’t ranked here. It appears where it matters: in what each device shares with an app like ours. Every price below was checked on the maker’s US page on 10 October 2026.
TL;DR
- Year one favors WHOOP; year four favors Oura. Ring 5 plus Oura’s annual plan costs $608.97 over three years, against $597 for WHOOP One. From year four, WHOOP One is more expensive: $796 against $678.96.354
- The Oura membership isn’t really optional. Without it you see only the three daily scores, and Oura lists its Apple Health and Strava integrations as needing an active membership on Gen3 and later.678
- Accuracy edge to Oura on overnight HRV, on last year’s hardware. A 2025 study found ECG agreement of 0.99 for Oura Ring 4 against 0.94 for WHOOP 4.0.9 Ring 5, WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG have no peer-reviewed validation.
- For workouts, buy WHOOP. It shows live heart rate and Strain. Oura’s ring “does not stream live heart rate to your phone’s screen during an activity”.1011
- The scores are not interchangeable. Oura Readiness (0–100) and WHOOP Recovery (0–100%) use different inputs and baselines, and neither formula is published.121314
- On iPhone, neither sends HRV or its score to Apple Health. WHOOP writes resting heart rate; Oura does not.15
Oura vs WHOOP: which should you buy in 2026?
Buy Oura if you want sleep-first tracking in a ring and the lower long-run cost: $349–$499 for the ring plus $69.99 a year. Buy WHOOP if you train hard and want Strain and live heart rate with no hardware to buy: $199–$359 a year. Among current models, only Oura Ring 4 has peer-reviewed validation, for overnight HRV and resting heart rate.354109

What is the difference between Oura and WHOOP?
Oura sells a ring once, from $349, and charges $69.99 a year for the membership that unlocks most of its features. WHOOP includes the band in a $199–$359 yearly membership. Neither has a screen or GPS. Oura is a ring built around sleep; WHOOP is a wrist or bicep band built around training load and recovery.35410
Is there a WHOOP watch? No. WHOOP “intentionally does not have a watch face”, and “the sensor itself does not have a built-in GPS”.10 Anyone searching “WHOOP watch vs Oura ring” is comparing two screenless devices.
For everyday wear, Oura is the lighter, less visible option: Ring 5 weighs from 2 g, against 26.5 g for the WHOOP 5.0 sensor.1610 WHOOP’s edge is that it charges on the wrist, so it doesn’t have to come off to charge.20
Ray Maker, the independent product tester behind DC Rainmaker, puts Oura’s strength simply: “that’s frankly what the Oura Ring is best at: Things other than sports.” And: “Oura does this in a tiny ring, with no other watch or band required.”28
What does the Oura membership include?
Oura’s membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and new members get the first month free.6 It covers:
- Sleep and heart rate: detailed sleep analysis and 24/7 heart rate tracking.6
- Health features: blood oxygen (SpO₂), Daytime Stress, Resilience, Cardiovascular Age and Cardio Capacity (VO2 max).6
- Women’s health: Cycle Insights and Pregnancy Insights.6
- Integrations: “Integration with third-party health and wellness apps like Strava”.6
- Oura Advisor, its AI chat, listed as “Gen3 or later with active membership”.29
Without it: “you’ll only be able to see your three daily Oura scores (Readiness, Activity, and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile information, app settings, and the Explore content.” You also lose access to the Oura API.6 There is no Lifetime option, and Gen2 owners don’t need a membership at all.6
What do the WHOOP tiers include?
- WHOOP One ($199/yr): “Core fitness and recovery insights, Strain & Sleep tracking, Strength Trainer, VO2 Max, AI Coach, Journal & Behavior Impact, Trends”.4
- WHOOP Peak ($239/yr): everything in One, plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor and Healthspan, with WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging.4
- WHOOP Life ($359/yr): everything in Peak, plus Blood Pressure Insights, Heart Screener (ECG and irregular heart rhythm notifications) and the 5.0 Medical Grade sensor.4
Women’s Hormonal Insights and “AI-powered personalized coaching” are on all three tiers.4 Monthly plans at $25, $30 and $40 exist, but only for members who have finished their 12-month commitment.4
Oura Ring 5 vs WHOOP 5.0: how do the current models compare?
Oura Ring 5 ($399–$499) is 40% smaller than Ring 4, with 6–9 days of battery but only 3 days of offline storage. WHOOP 5.0 has up to 14+ days of battery and charges on the wrist. Neither Ring 5 nor WHOOP 5.0 has peer-reviewed validation. The newest head-to-head study tested Oura Ring 4 against WHOOP 4.0.121209

What does the smaller ring buy you in accuracy? Oura claims “a 12% increase in nighttime HRV accuracy, and up to a 19% increase in workout accuracy”, as reported by Ray Maker.28 That is Oura’s own claim. No independent study has tested it yet.
Ray Maker was cool on the upgrade overall. His spec recap reads “Pricing: Increased by $50 from $349 to $399”, and his verdict: “It feels like they’ve kinda given up on innovating with actual new features.”28
There is a practical catch too. If your ring size is under 6 or over 13, only Ring 4 fits. And Oura warns “Sizing differs from other models”, so use the free sizing kit even if you own an older Oura.16
Searching for Oura Ring 4 vs WHOOP 4.0? That is exactly the pair a 2025 Air Force Research Laboratory–funded study tested. Ring 4 agreed more closely with ECG on overnight HRV and resting heart rate, and the numbers are in the HRV section below.9
WHOOP 4.0 is now the legacy device. WHOOP’s free trial may ship a 4.0 that “may be certified pre-owned”, and 4.0 members pay $49 (Peak) or $79 (Life) to upgrade to the new hardware.304

Which is cheaper over 3 years, Oura or WHOOP?
Over three years, Oura Ring 5 in Silver or Black plus Oura’s annual plan costs $608.97, against $597 for WHOOP One, $717 for Peak and $1,077 for Life. WHOOP One is $269.99 cheaper in year one and more expensive from year four. WHOOP Peak passes Oura in year three, and Life in year two.354
| Option | Hardware | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | Year 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 4 Silver ($349) + annual | $349 | $418.99 | $488.98 | $558.97 | $628.96 |
| Oura Ring 5 Silver/Black ($399) + annual | $399 | $468.99 | $538.98 | $608.97 | $678.96 |
| Oura Ring 4 Ceramic (on sale, $399) + annual | $399 | $468.99 | $538.98 | $608.97 | $678.96 |
| Oura Ring 5 premium finish ($499) + annual | $499 | $568.99 | $638.98 | $708.97 | $778.96 |
| WHOOP One ($199/yr) | $0 | $199 | $398 | $597 | $796 |
| WHOOP Peak ($239/yr) | $0 | $239 | $478 | $717 | $956 |
| WHOOP Life ($359/yr) | $0 | $359 | $718 | $1,077 | $1,436 |
Computed from US list prices on 10 October 2026, before tax; sales ignored except where marked. Oura’s first membership month is free, so the annual plan bills at months 2, 14 and 26, and three payments cover 36 months ($209.97); paying monthly for 35 months comes to $209.65, about the same. WHOOP is the annual price times years. Sources: Oura’s store and membership page,35 and WHOOP’s pricing page,4 all checked 10 October 2026.
Best value, then: WHOOP One if you’ll keep it under three years, Oura if you’ll keep it longer. Here is where the lines cross, Ring 5 Silver or Black against WHOOP One:
- Year 1: WHOOP One is $269.99 cheaper.
- Year 2: $140.98 cheaper.
- Year 3: $11.97 cheaper, nearly level.
- Year 4: WHOOP One is now $117.04 more expensive, and the gap grows every year.
- WHOOP Peak passes Oura in year three ($717 against $608.97). WHOOP Life passes it in year two ($718 against $538.98).
The memberships alone tell the same story: $69.99 a year for Oura against $199 for WHOOP One, a $129.01 yearly difference.54
Two things the table can’t show. WHOOP’s hardware comes with the membership, so a new sensor doesn’t mean a new purchase; an Oura upgrade means buying a new ring. And Oura says its membership has “HSA/FSA eligible membership coverage”.5
Does Oura work without a membership?
Barely. Oura Support says: “Without an active membership, you’ll only be able to see your three daily Oura scores (Readiness, Activity, and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile information, app settings, and the Explore content.”6 The Ring 4 product page says it more briefly: “Without a membership, the Oura Ring can be used only with limited functionality.”17
Integrations stop too. Oura lists both its Apple Health and Strava integrations as available for “Gen3 or later with active membership”.78
Some comparison sites describe Oura as a one-time purchase with an “optional” membership. In practice, the membership gates most of the product. Budget $69.99 a year from the start.
Can you try WHOOP for free?
Yes, but read the terms. WHOOP offers a 30-day free trial, and “the only charge for your trial will be shipping”.30 Here is what happens next:
- Do nothing, and “Your trial will automatically convert to a 12-month Peak Membership at $239/year”.30 So the realistic default WHOOP price is Peak, not One.
- Cancel but keep the band, and “A $110 restocking fee will be charged”.30
- You can’t choose the hardware. The trial ships a WHOOP 5.0 or a WHOOP 4.0 that “may be certified pre-owned”.30
- WHOOP MG is not available on the trial.30
Oura’s version of a trial is a free first membership month plus “Free, easy returns within 30 days of purchase”, but you buy the ring first.3

How do Oura and WHOOP differ for readiness or recovery?
Oura Readiness is a 0–100 score (85 and up is “Optimal”) built from nine contributors, including HRV Balance, which compares your 14-day HRV with a two-to-three-month baseline. WHOOP Recovery is 0–100% (green at 67% and up), led by HRV against a 30-day baseline, then resting heart rate. Neither company publishes its formula.12311314

Oura Support and WHOOP Support, checked 10 October 2026; formula disclosure from Doherty et al., 2025. ”—” means the source we checked does not state it.
The short version: both scores lean on overnight HRV and resting heart rate. But they sample HRV differently, compare it with different baselines and mix in different extras. Oura adds activity balance and sleep regularity; WHOOP adds respiratory rate and blood oxygen.
So can you compare an Oura 80 with a WHOOP 80%? No. Eric Topol, MD, Director and Founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, put it bluntly in September 2026: “Since none of these are standardized, they are not interchangeable, so if you get a 90 for Oura that has no relationship to a 90 on a Google Fitbit Air.” He also notes that “some companies do not use the term ‘readiness,’ such as WHOOP for recovery”, and that “the company can update its algorithm for readiness score at any point without notification to device users.”33
Nobody shows the working. A 2025 review led by Cailbhe Doherty, PhD, of University College Dublin’s School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, catalogued 14 composite scores from 10 brands. “None of the manufacturers disclosed their exact algorithmic formulas.”14 Doherty’s plain-English version: “Most companies don’t disclose how exactly they turn raw data into a final score.”34
Marco Altini, PhD, co-founder of HRV4Training and a co-author of that review, is blunter still. He is also an advisor to Oura and co-authored an Oura sleep-staging paper, so weigh that.3536 His advice: “at least use it to look at the physiology, and ignore made-up metrics (recovery, readiness, etc.)”35
Real users seem to land in the same place. In interviews with 17 regular exercisers who had used WHOOP or Oura for at least three months, researchers found that “users prioritize self-awareness, flexibility, and personal judgment for exercise decisions.”37
One practical difference follows from all this: neither score leaves its own app for Apple Health. A coaching app that reads Apple Health, SensAI included, sees the raw sleep and heart rate behind a score, never the score itself.15 For how each score is built, see how Body Battery, WHOOP Recovery and Oura Readiness are calculated.
What’s the best wearable for HRV tracking: Oura or WHOOP?
In the only independent head-to-head, a 2025 study of 13 adults over 536 nights, Oura Ring 4 agreed with a chest-strap ECG at 0.99 for overnight HRV, against 0.94 for WHOOP 4.0. Both base their HRV figure on your sleep, computed in different ways. Ring 5 and WHOOP 5.0 are untested, and neither brand sends HRV to Apple Health.9321315
Oura and WHOOP measure HRV differently. Oura averages five-minute samples across your whole sleep; WHOOP weights its average toward slow-wave sleep and later in the night.3213 So an Oura 45 ms and a WHOOP 45 ms are not the same measurement, even though both report RMSSD.9
How close does each get to the truth? The 2025 study by Dial and colleagues, funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory with no competing interests declared, compared both against a Polar H10 chest strap:9
| Device | Overnight HRV (CCC) | HRV error (MAPE) | Resting HR (CCC) | Resting HR error (MAPE) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 4 (“Gen 4”) | 0.99 | 5.96% | 0.98 | 1.94% |
| Oura Gen3 | 0.97 | 7.15% | 0.97 | 1.67% |
| WHOOP 4.0 | 0.94 | 8.17% | 0.91 | 3.00% |
Dial et al., Physiological Reports, 2025. CCC is agreement from 0 to 1, where 1 is perfect; MAPE is average percentage error.
The authors’ summary: “Oura devices showed the highest agreement for RHR and HRV, and WHOOP showed acceptable agreement”.9 One caveat from the same paper: on HRV error (MAPE), the difference between the two Oura rings and WHOOP 4.0 was not statistically significant; Oura’s edge is in agreement (CCC), and both Oura rings had significantly lower resting-heart-rate error than WHOOP.9
There is a counterpoint. In a 2022 lab study of Oura Gen2 and WHOOP 3.0, WHOOP’s HRV was closer to ECG: an absolute bias of 4.7 ms with an ICC of 0.99, against Oura’s 18.9 ms and 0.63.38 Two caveats sit in that same study. WHOOP’s raw data were “provided by the manufacturer”, and the lab “receives support for research (i.e., funding, equipment) from WHOOP Inc.”38
What this means for you: on the most recent independent evidence, Oura has the edge for overnight HRV, on hardware one generation old. Topol’s caution still applies: “Only resting heart rate has been shown consistently across devices to be extremely accurate.”33
And if you want your HRV in another app on iPhone, neither device helps. WHOOP’s own support page says it “does not export HRV data to Apple Health at this time”, because Apple Health stores SDNN while WHOOP calculates RMSSD.27 Oura doesn’t write HRV either. HRV reaches SensAI only from an Apple Watch.15
Which is more accurate for sleep tracking, Oura or WHOOP?
Measured in the same lab night, the two staged sleep about equally: kappa 0.43 for Oura Gen2 and 0.44 for WHOOP 3.0 against polysomnography (2022). Oura has the larger evidence base, including a six-study meta-analysis finding no significant difference from polysomnography or actigraphy, but much of it carries Oura ties. Current models are untested for sleep.3839
A few terms first:
- CCC (Lin’s concordance) is agreement with the reference from 0 to 1, where 1 is perfect.
- MAPE is the average error as a percentage; MAE is the average error in the measurement’s own units.
- Kappa (κ) measures sleep-scoring agreement beyond chance.
- PSG (polysomnography) is the lab sleep study that kappa is measured against.
- RMSSD is the HRV measure both Oura and WHOOP report.9
WHOOP vs Oura accuracy: every study and who funded it

| DC Rainmaker, Jul 2026 (not peer-reviewed28) | Oura Ring 5, worn with WHOOP 5.0/MG and others | Real-world sleep and workout HR | “the major brands are all mostly a wash for sleep tracking”; Ring 5 workout HR “largely pretty good” | Independent reviewer |
Peer-reviewed studies found via PubMed, 10 October 2026. No peer-reviewed study tested the current flagships (Oura Ring 5, WHOOP 5.0 or WHOOP MG); Dial 2025 is the only one that tested a model still on sale, Oura Ring 4. Only the non-peer-reviewed DC Rainmaker test used the current flagships.
The scorecard is split. Oura leads on overnight HRV and resting heart rate, and the two tie on sleep staging in the one study that tested both on the same night.938
Read the COI column before you read the winner. Oura’s sleep evidence base is bigger, but Svensson, Robbins and Altini carry Oura funding, advisory or employment ties, and Miller’s lab carries WHOOP’s.40413638 Searles 2026 is the counterweight: in older adults, Oura missed total sleep by more than an hour.42
One more correction to a common claim. Ring 4 is validated for overnight HRV and resting heart rate, not for sleep. We found no peer-reviewed sleep study that names Ring 4.
The bigger picture is how little gets validated at all. Doherty’s 2024 umbrella review found that “approximately 11%” of consumer wearables released to date had been validated for at least one biometric outcome.46
What this means for you: if sleep is all you care about, choose on form and cost, not accuracy. Ray Maker’s 2026 verdict was that the big brands are “all getting the sleep times and HRV scores correct, and with roughly consistent sleep scores.”28
Which is better for workouts and athletes, WHOOP or Oura?
WHOOP is the better training tool: Live Heart Rate and Zone on every tier, a 0–21 Strain score, a Strength Trainer and automatic Strava import. Oura’s ring “does not stream live heart rate to your phone’s screen during an activity”, and in an independent 2026 test of daytime heart rate, Oura Gen3 had among the largest errors.104191144
What does Oura give you during a workout? Not much in real time. Without a third-party strap, “the Oura Ring will instead track your heart rate during the activity and show it in the summary afterward.”11 Live Activity Tracking also “is not supported through the Apple Watch”.11
Automatic Activity Detection only catches activities “at least 10 minutes long”.47 Oura says its May 2026 update improved detection for “more than 40 activities including low-motion workouts like pilates and yoga.”24
Ray Maker didn’t soften it: “the Oura Ring 5 is now woefully behind even the most basic wearables when it comes to sports tracking.”28 Still, he found its workout heart rate “largely pretty good actually”, though it “basically falls apart” on a technical trail descent.28
The peer-reviewed picture is harsher for older Oura hardware. In a 2026 test of 10 wearables, Oura Gen3 had a median daytime heart-rate error of 11.0 bpm (MAPE 15.0%), among the devices with “larger errors”.44 WHOOP was not in that study, so it says nothing about WHOOP.
WHOOP is built for this job:
- Strain measures load on a 0 to 21 scale.10
- Live Heart Rate and Zone are on every tier; on Peak and Life they sit in Health Monitor.10
- Strength Trainer is in WHOOP One.4
- Auto-detection earned Ray Maker’s top rating: “Excellent, with very rare/few errors”.48
- Arm wear: in a 2025 study, the same WHOOP 4.0 had a 1.92% treadmill heart-rate error on the upper arm, against 5.95% on the wrist.45 Lifters who hate a wrist band can try the bicep.
Strava is where the gap is widest:
- WHOOP imports Strava activities automatically and exports workouts with their Activity Strain and your Recovery score, on One, Peak and Life.19
- Oura exports only workouts recorded through Activity Heart Rate, plus its Readiness and Activity Scores. “Activities recorded in Oura through Automatic Activity Detection, and manually added activities, are not currently exported to Strava”, and it imports only the current day’s activities.8
Need GPS, pace or power on your wrist? Then neither is the answer, and you want a watch. Considering Garmin instead? See WHOOP vs Garmin.
Which is better for women’s health, Oura or WHOOP?
Oura offers Cycle Insights, Fertile Window, Pregnancy Insights, a Perimenopause Check-In and Natural Cycles integration, which Oura calls “an FDA-cleared contraception app”; its membership lists Women’s Health among its features. WHOOP’s Menstrual Cycle Insights is on every tier, but WHOOP says it is “not intended for use in conception or contraception”. On fertility tracking, Oura goes further.253626
| Oura (with membership) | WHOOP (all tiers) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle tracking | Cycle Insights, from temperature trends2549 | Menstrual Cycle Insights26 |
| Ovulation / fertile window | Fertile Window (available in the US2550) | Phases “including ovulation” are “estimates only”26 |
| Contraception | Natural Cycles integration, “an FDA-cleared contraception app”3 | “not intended for use in conception or contraception”26 |
| Pregnancy | Pregnancy Insights25 | “WHOOP cannot detect pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause.”26 |
| Perimenopause | Perimenopause Check-In25 | Same as above26 |
| Tier needed | Membership; Women’s Health is listed among its features6 | Any membership, WHOOP 4.0 and later26 |
Oura Support and WHOOP Support, checked 10 October 2026.
How well does Oura spot ovulation? In 1,155 cycles, Oura’s physiology method detected 96.4% of ovulations with an average error of 1.26 days, against 3.44 days for the calendar method. All three authors are Oura employees.51
Both recovery scores adjust for the cycle. Oura’s Readiness “takes into account natural biometric fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy”, and WHOOP’s Recovery includes menstrual cycle phase.1210
If you’re using either for contraception or conception decisions, that is a conversation for your doctor, not a ring or a band.
Oura or WHOOP for longevity and overall health insights?
Neither device is proven to extend life. WHOOP Peak ($239 a year) adds Healthspan, with WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging, and WHOOP Life ($359) adds ECG and Blood Pressure Insights. Oura’s membership includes Cardiovascular Age, Cardio Capacity (VO2 max) and Health Radar, which Oura says “does not diagnose or monitor any conditions”.462422
| Oura (membership) | WHOOP (by tier) | |
|---|---|---|
| Biological-age metric | Cardiovascular Age, from estimated pulse wave velocity; needs 14 nights in the past 30 days52 | Healthspan (WHOOP Age, Pace of Aging), Peak and Life4 |
| VO2 max estimate | Cardio Capacity, “an age-adjusted estimate of your VO2 max”53 | VO2 Max, in WHOOP One4 |
| ECG | No ECG sensor listed for Ring 516 | Heart Screener, Life only4 |
| Blood pressure | Blood Pressure Signals, “a wellness feature” in Health Radar23 | Blood Pressure Insights, Life only4 |
| Blood testing | Lab uploads in Health Panels, US only2450 | Advanced Labs, $199–$899 a year for 1–6 tests through Quest54 |
| AI chat | Oura Advisor, “a state-of-the-art large language model”29 | “AI-powered personalized coaching”, all tiers4 |
Oura Support and blog, and WHOOP Support, checked 10 October 2026.
Read the fine print on both. Oura says “Oura Ring does not directly measure your PWV”; Cardiovascular Age is an estimate built on an estimate.52 WHOOP’s blood pressure feature has a regulatory history: the FDA sent WHOOP a warning letter over it in July 2025 and dropped it in June 2026, after WHOOP changed the feature.55
We found no peer-reviewed validation of WHOOP Healthspan or Oura Cardiovascular Age as predictors of how long you’ll live. That doesn’t make them wrong. It makes them unproven.
Doherty’s advice fits both: “Use your fitness tracker as a guide, but not as your coach, your doctor, or your judge.”34
Do Oura and WHOOP sync with Apple Health?
Yes, both write raw data to Apple Health, and neither writes HRV. Oura writes sleep with stages, heart rate at one-minute intervals, active energy, steps, respiratory rate and workouts, but no resting heart rate. WHOOP writes sleep, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, workouts and workout calories. Readiness and Recovery stay in their own apps.15
| Oura | WHOOP | |
|---|---|---|
| Writes to Apple Health | Sleep with stages, heart rate at one-minute intervals, active energy, steps, respiratory rate, workouts including auto-detected ones15 | Sleep, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, workouts, workout calories15 |
| Resting heart rate | No15 | Yes15 |
| HRV | No15 | No: WHOOP calculates rMSSD, while Apple Health stores SDNN15 |
| Scores that stay behind | Readiness, plus the Sleep and Activity scores157 | Recovery, Strain15 |
| Needs a paid plan? | Yes: “Gen3 or later with active membership”7 | Included in every membership |
| Quirks | Data may not transfer if the app wasn’t opened before midnight; open it daily15 | — |
Source: the SensAI Help Center guide, last updated 25 September 2026, which cites each vendor’s own support page,15 plus Oura’s Apple Health Integration page, updated 7 October 2026, for the membership row.7 ”—” means the source does not say.
For the full breakdown, see what Oura, WHOOP and Garmin sync to Apple Health.
What this means if you use SensAI
SensAI reads Apple Health only. There is no Oura or WHOOP account to link inside it.15
Whichever you choose, its sleep and heart rate still count. In the Help Center’s words, “Sleep and overnight heart rate from your device shape how hard Coach asks you to push on a given day.”15
The brand changes which raw fields arrive. WHOOP writes resting heart rate and blood oxygen; Oura writes neither. Neither writes HRV.15
HRV reaches SensAI only from Apple Watch. Without one, SensAI’s HRV tile reads “No recent value”.15
One Oura-specific cost to plan for. Oura lists its Apple Health integration as requiring an active membership on Gen3 and later, so budget $69.99 a year if you want Oura’s data in any app that reads Apple Health, SensAI included.7
Which coaching apps can use Oura or WHOOP data? Any app that reads Apple Health sees the raw sleep, heart rate and workouts from both, never Readiness or Recovery.15
To see what your device shares and how to connect it, read how to connect a wearable to SensAI through Apple Health.
Where SensAI falls short
- It is not a wearable. You still need an Oura, a WHOOP or an Apple Watch.
- iPhone only. It requires iOS 26, and watchOS 26 for the Apple Watch app. There is no Android version.56
- No HRV from Oura or WHOOP. That holds whichever of the two you pick.15
- Score history doesn’t transfer. Your Readiness or Recovery history stays in its own app.15
- Limited history. SensAI syncs roughly the last 30 days of Apple Health workouts.15
- It is a subscription. The App Store listing says “Try free for 7 days. No subscription required to start.” After that it costs $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year.56
- Few ratings so far. SensAI has 4.6 stars from 37 US App Store ratings.56
Oura or WHOOP: which one fits how you live and train?
Buy Oura Ring 4 or 5 if sleep, discretion and long-run cost matter most. Buy WHOOP One if you train hard and want live heart rate and Strain with no hardware to buy. Choose WHOOP Peak or Life only for Healthspan, ECG or blood pressure. If sleep and training matter equally, WHOOP covers both; Oura covers training thinly.341128
| If you… | Buy | Why | Price (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Want sleep tracking in the smallest device | Oura Ring 5 | From 2 g, 6–9 days of battery161 | $399 + $69.99/yr |
| Want the cheapest validated option | Oura Ring 4 | The only current model with peer-reviewed overnight HRV and resting-heart-rate validation9 | $349 + $69.99/yr |
| Wear a ring size under 6 or over 13 | Oura Ring 4 | Sizes 4–15; Ring 5 runs 6–1321 | From $349 + $69.99/yr |
| Train hard and want live heart rate and Strain | WHOOP One | Live Heart Rate and Zone, Strain, Strength Trainer104 | $199/yr |
| Lift and want arm wear | WHOOP on the bicep | Upper-arm placement measured better (on WHOOP 4.045) | From $199/yr |
| Want healthspan, ECG or blood pressure | WHOOP Peak or Life | Healthspan (Peak); ECG and Blood Pressure Insights (Life4) | $239 / $359 a year |
| Care most about cycle and fertility tracking | Oura | Fertile Window and Natural Cycles integration253 | From $349 + $69.99/yr |
| Want the lowest 4-year cost | Oura Ring 4 Silver + annual plan | $628.96 over four years, against $796 for WHOOP One354 | $349 + $69.99/yr |
| Already wear an Apple Watch | Probably neither | See the last section below | — |
| Want HRV in an iPhone coaching app such as SensAI | Neither: add an Apple Watch | Among the devices our Help Center covers, only Apple Watch shares HRV with Apple Health15 | — |

Frequently asked questions
Is Oura or WHOOP better overall?
It depends on whether you’re sleep-first or training-first. Oura wins on comfort for sleep-first users and on long-run cost; on sleep accuracy the two are close; WHOOP wins on workouts. On current hardware, neither flagship is validated; Oura Ring 4 is, for overnight HRV and resting heart rate.928
Oura vs WHOOP: which is best for getting healthy?
Neither device makes you healthier by itself. Oura suits you if better sleep is the goal; WHOOP suits you if training consistency is. Both track sleep and resting heart rate, and Topol notes that “Only resting heart rate has been shown consistently across devices to be extremely accurate.”33
WHOOP vs Oura: which is more accurate?
In a 2025 study, Oura Ring 4 agreed with ECG at 0.99 for overnight HRV and 0.98 for resting heart rate, against 0.94 and 0.91 for WHOOP 4.0. Neither Ring 5 nor WHOOP 5.0 has been tested.9
Does Oura work without a subscription?
Only in a limited way. Without a membership you see just the three daily scores, and Oura lists its Apple Health and Strava integrations as needing an active membership.678
Can you pay for WHOOP monthly or try it free?
Not monthly at signup: new members commit for 12 months. WHOOP’s 30-day free trial converts to a 12-month Peak membership at $239 a year, and keeping the band after cancelling costs a $110 restocking fee.430
Is the Oura Ring 5 better than the Ring 4?
It is 40% smaller with 6–9 days of battery, but it stores only 3 days of data offline (Ring 4: 7) and comes in sizes 6–13 only. Ring 4 has peer-reviewed validation; Ring 5 does not yet.1219
WHOOP watch vs Oura Ring: is there a WHOOP watch?
No. WHOOP “intentionally does not have a watch face”, and the sensor has no built-in GPS.10 So “WHOOP watch vs Oura Ring” compares two screenless wearables: a 26.5 g band worn on the wrist or bicep against a ring from 2 g.1016
Which shows real-time heart rate during workouts, WHOOP or Oura?
WHOOP, with Live Heart Rate and Zone. Oura shows live heart rate only from a third-party heart-rate monitor.1011
Which is better for tracking sleep, WHOOP or Oura?
They are close. In the same lab night, Oura Gen2 and WHOOP 3.0 staged sleep at κ 0.43 and 0.44, and Ray Maker called the big brands “mostly a wash for sleep tracking”.3828
Do Oura or WHOOP send HRV to Apple Health?
No. Among the devices our Help Center covers, only Apple Watch shares HRV with Apple Health.15
Which fitness coaching apps can use Oura or WHOOP data?
Apps that read Apple Health get the raw sleep, heart rate and workouts from both, never Readiness or Recovery. SensAI is one; the Help Center shows what each device shares.15
Should you buy Oura or WHOOP if you already have an Apple Watch?
Usually not for recovery data alone. Ray Maker’s 2026 verdict: “If you already have one of those watch/band devices, there’s literally no reason to get an Oura Ring in 2026”. Oura earns its place if you won’t sleep in a watch. WHOOP earns its $199–$359 a year if you want Strain coaching, Healthspan or ECG.284
Ray Maker’s fuller take is fair to the ring: Oura “has value for folks that want some of the core sleep/activity metrics in a simplified way, but don’t want to wear a watch/band.”28
There is also the HRV question. Apple Watch is the only device in our Help Center guide that shares HRV with Apple Health, so on iPhone it stays your HRV source whichever you add.15
SensAI coaches from the raw data any of these devices writes to Apple Health, on iPhone and Apple Watch.
