Apple just moved onto WHOOP’s turf. Apple Watch Series 12, on sale since 18 September 2026, adds a daily readiness score from 0 to 10, measures heart rate every five seconds and checks heart rate variability (HRV) “up to 24 times more often”.1 It starts at $399.12

WHOOP still sells no hardware on its own. You pay $199, $239 or $359 a year for WHOOP One, Peak or Life, and the band comes with the membership.3 So the choice is a smartwatch you buy once, or a screenless band you rent.

We make SensAI, an AI coaching app for iPhone and Apple Watch that reads Apple Health. It isn’t ranked here. It shows up where it matters: in what each device shares with an app like ours. Every Apple and WHOOP price and feature below was checked on the maker’s own US pages on 11 October 2026.

TL;DR

  • Over two years they cost the same; after that Apple Watch is cheaper. A $399 Series 12 against WHOOP One at $199 a year: WHOOP is $200 cheaper in year one, $1 cheaper in year two and $198 more expensive by year three.23
  • Apple Watch now does recovery, but only the newest models. Readiness, Recovery HRV and daytime vitals need a Series 12 or Ultra 4.45 Older watches and the SE 3 don’t get the score.
  • WHOOP wins on battery and focus. Up to 14+ days per charge and no screen, against 24 hours for Series 12.67
  • Apple Watch wins on health features. ECG, irregular rhythm notifications, hypertension notifications and sleep apnea notifications are on Series 12 at no extra cost.7 WHOOP puts ECG and blood pressure on its $359 Life tier, and its irregular-rhythm notifications aren’t offered in the US.38
  • Accuracy is a split decision. Published studies favor WHOOP on overnight HRV. On sleep they split: one lab study favored WHOOP 3.0, a newer one Apple Watch Series 8.91011 Neither Series 12 nor WHOOP 5.0 has peer-reviewed validation yet.
  • Only Apple Watch sends HRV to Apple Health. WHOOP writes sleep, resting heart rate and more, but not HRV, and Recovery and Strain stay in its app.1213

Apple Watch vs WHOOP: which should you buy in 2026?

Buy Apple Watch Series 12 ($399 and up) for health, workouts and smartwatch use with no subscription. Buy WHOOP ($199–$359 a year) if you want a screenless band that lasts up to 14+ days per charge and coaches you on Strain and Recovery. Already own an Apple Watch? You probably don’t need WHOOP for recovery data alone.236

What is the difference between Apple Watch and WHOOP?

Apple Watch is a smartwatch with a screen, GPS and apps that you buy once, from $249. WHOOP is a screenless band that comes with a $199–$359 yearly membership. Apple Watch tracks health as one job among many and needs charging about daily. WHOOP does nothing but track your body and runs up to 14+ days per charge.14376

Think of it as a Swiss Army knife against a scalpel. WHOOP’s own support page lists what it is not: “A smartwatch - WHOOP intentionally does not have a watch face to distract you with notifications.” It also isn’t “A GPS watch”: “the sensor itself does not have a built-in GPS.”18

That trade shows up in three places:

  • Screen. Apple Watch shows you heart rate, pace, messages and your rings. WHOOP shows you nothing; everything lives in the WHOOP iPhone app.22
  • Battery. Series 12 is rated at up to 24 hours of normal use, and Apple says 15 minutes of charging gives up to 12 hours.7 WHOOP 5.0 lasts “up to 14+ days”, and its Wireless PowerPack “charges while you wear it”.6
  • Money. Apple sells hardware. WHOOP sells a membership: there’s no WHOOP price without one.3

Is there a WHOOP watch? No. Anyone searching “WHOOP watch vs Apple Watch” or “WHOOP band vs Apple Watch” is comparing a watch with a band that has no face at all.18

What do the WHOOP tiers include?

  • WHOOP One ($199/yr): “Core fitness and recovery insights, Strain & Sleep tracking, Strength Trainer, VO2 Max, AI Coach, Journal & Behavior Impact, Trends”, on the WHOOP 5.0 sensor in the US.3
  • WHOOP Peak ($239/yr): everything in One, plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor and Healthspan, with WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging.3
  • WHOOP Life ($359/yr): everything in Peak, plus Blood Pressure Insights, Heart Screener (ECG and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications) and the 5.0 Medical Grade sensor.3

New members can also pick a 24-month membership. Monthly plans at $25, $30 and $40 exist, but “Month to Month subscriptions are no longer available as a standard signup option”.3

What does Apple Watch cost after you buy it?

Nothing is required. Two add-ons are optional:

  • AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss: $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year for SE 3, $4.99 or $49.99 for Series 12, and $5.99 or $59.99 for Ultra 4.14215
  • Apple Fitness+: $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, for guided workouts. New subscribers “may get three months” free with a new Series 12, SE 3 or Ultra 4.251

Neither is needed for heart rate, sleep, Vitals, Training Load or Readiness.

Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3 vs WHOOP 5.0 and MG: how do the current models compare?

Series 12 ($399+) and Ultra 4 ($799) get Apple’s new Health Sensing System, Readiness and Recovery HRV. SE 3 ($249+) skips Readiness, ECG, Blood Oxygen and hypertension notifications. WHOOP 5.0 powers One and Peak; WHOOP MG, the only WHOOP with ECG and blood pressure, comes only with Life ($359 a year).2151936

Apple’s lineup changed in September 2026. Series 12 and Ultra 4 got what Apple calls the Health Sensing System: a “second-generation electrical heart sensor”, an always-on optical heart sensor, and blood oxygen and temperature sensors.717 Apple says the watch now “measures heart rate every five seconds, all day long”.1

Searching “Apple Watch Series 12 vs WHOOP 5.0”? That is the fair fight: both are the current flagships. Neither has an independent peer-reviewed validation yet. Apple has published its own heart-rate study comparing Series 12 with WHOOP 5 and five other devices; we cover what it does and doesn’t show in the accuracy section.26

Which is cheaper over 3 years, Apple Watch or WHOOP?

Over three years, a $399 Series 12 costs $399, against $597 for WHOOP One, $717 for Peak and $1,077 for Life. WHOOP One is cheaper only in year one; by year two the two are level. Adding AppleCare+ ($49.99 a year) brings Series 12 to $548.97, still below WHOOP One. Ultra 4 ($799) beats WHOOP Life in year three.2153

Computed from US list prices on 11 October 2026, before tax and ignoring sales. AppleCare+ is the yearly “with Theft and Loss” price, which Apple bills “until cancelled”. WHOOP is the yearly price times years. Sources: Apple’s online store14215 and WHOOP’s pricing page,3 checked 11 October 2026.

Here is where the lines cross for the most common pairing, Series 12 42 mm against WHOOP One:

  • Year 1: WHOOP One is $200 cheaper.
  • Year 2: WHOOP One is $1 cheaper. Call it level.
  • Year 3: Series 12 is now $198 cheaper, and the gap grows by $199 a year.
  • WHOOP Peak passes Series 12 in year two ($478 against $399). WHOOP Life passes it in year two as well ($718), and passes Ultra 4 in year three ($1,077 against $799).

Two things the table can’t show. WHOOP’s membership includes its current sensor, so a new band doesn’t mean a new purchase on day one.3 And an Apple Watch upgrade means buying a new watch. If you replace your watch every two years, the gap narrows.

Can you try WHOOP for free?

Yes, with conditions. WHOOP offers a 30-day free trial, and “the only charge for your trial will be shipping”.27 What happens next:

  • Do nothing, and “Your trial will automatically convert to a 12-month Peak Membership at $239/year”.27 So the realistic default price is Peak, not One.
  • Cancel but keep the band, and “A $110 restocking fee will be charged”.27
  • You can’t choose the hardware. The trial ships a WHOOP 5.0 or a WHOOP 4.0 that “may be certified pre-owned”.27
  • WHOOP MG is not available on the trial.27

Can Apple Watch track recovery like WHOOP?

Yes, on Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple’s Readiness app gives a 0–10 score built from recent activity, training load, overnight vitals and sleep score, and it updates through the day. WHOOP Recovery is a 0–100% morning score led by HRV and resting heart rate. SE 3 and older watches don’t get Readiness; third-party apps fill the gap.42019

Here is how the two scores line up:

Apple Support (watchOS 27 user guide) and WHOOP Support, checked 11 October 2026.

Ray Maker, the independent product tester behind DC Rainmaker, tested Series 12 for three weeks. His read: Apple’s score is “more or less the same concept as other readiness scores we’ve seen from Google and Garmin, which are a bit more advanced than the basic recovery and strain scores you see from Whoop and Oura.” The difference he flags: WHOOP’s Recovery is a one-time morning score, “whereas Garmin & Apple’s scores are dynamic throughout the day.”31

He also found bugs: “the Readiness Score isn’t without its wonk,” with values that went “null” for seconds or longer, improved by a firmware update. “Still, it clearly wasn’t ready to launch when it did.”31

Why don’t older Apple Watches get Readiness?

Apple’s own guide limits the Readiness app to Series 12 and Ultra 4.4 The same goes for Recovery HRV, the live heart-rate chart and the daytime view in the Vitals app.53233 Ray Maker’s explanation: a Series 11 “doesn’t have the right sensor to gather enough HRV data to complete the overnight HRV trending,” so there is no Readiness score.31

What older watches still give you:

  • Training Load, which “compares the intensity and duration of your workouts over the last 7 days to what you’ve done over the previous 28 days”.28
  • Sleep score, 0–100, built from duration (50 points), bedtime consistency (30) and interruptions (20).21 It’s listed on SE 3 too.16
  • Third-party recovery apps. Athlytic says it “reads your overnight HRV and resting heart rate against your own baseline”; Bevel offers sleep, recovery and strain guidance. Both read Apple Watch data.3435 Ray Maker calls this kind of app a fair stopgap for Series 10 and 11 owners.31

Is Apple Readiness the same as WHOOP Recovery?

No. They share ingredients but not recipes. Apple blends in activity and training load; WHOOP leans on HRV and resting heart rate against a 30-day baseline.420 A 7 on Apple and a 70% on WHOOP are not the same thing.

Eric Topol, MD, Director and Founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, put it plainly in September 2026: “Since none of these are standardized, they are not interchangeable.” On Apple’s new score, he notes “there are no published data on this score, not even on their website.”29

What this means for you: pick the score you’ll actually act on, then watch its trend, not one day’s number. Cailbhe Doherty, an assistant professor in University College Dublin’s School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, has a rule for every tracker score: “Use your fitness tracker as a guide, but not as your coach, your doctor, or your judge.”30

Apple Watch vs WHOOP accuracy: which measures HRV, heart rate and sleep better?

It depends on the metric. On overnight HRV, WHOOP has the better record: 0.94 agreement with ECG for WHOOP 4.0, against roughly 29% error for Apple Watch Series 9 on morning readings. On sleep, one lab study favored WHOOP 3.0 and a newer one favored Apple Watch Series 8. Heart rate is good on both; current flagships are untested.9361011

A few terms first:

  • HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher usually means better recovery.
  • RMSSD and SDNN are two different ways to calculate it. They give different numbers for the same heart.
  • CCC is agreement with the reference from 0 to 1, where 1 is perfect. MAPE is average percentage error.
  • Kappa (κ) measures sleep-staging agreement beyond chance. PSG (polysomnography) is the lab sleep study it’s measured against.

Why Apple Watch HRV and WHOOP HRV don’t match

Start here, because it explains most “my numbers don’t match” complaints. WHOOP calculates HRV as RMSSD, a weighted overnight average “with more weight given to slow-wave sleep (SWS) and later stages of the night”.20 Apple Health has long stored HRV as SDNN, which is why WHOOP says “WHOOP does not export HRV data to Apple Health at this time.”1337

That is changing on Apple’s side. Ray Maker reports that on Series 12, “Apple now uses RMSSD for their nightly/recovery HRV values (and all values shown in Vitals), letting you compare it with others (whereas in the past they used SDNN, which wasn’t easily comparable).”31 Apple’s HealthKit documentation also lists a new heartRateVariabilityRMSSD data type, introduced with iOS 27 and watchOS 27.38 WHOOP’s support page, last updated in April 2026, still says it doesn’t export HRV.13

So, can you compare “Apple Watch HRV vs WHOOP HRV”? On Series 12’s Recovery HRV, more closely than before. Ray Maker logged Series 12 at 40 ms and 50 ms on two nights when his WHOOP 5.0 MG read 47 ms and 68 ms, and called the spread “quite varied compared to what I tend to see as comparisons.”31 That is one person, two nights. On any older Apple Watch, the numbers measure different things.

Peer-reviewed studies found via PubMed, 11 October 2026. No peer-reviewed study has tested Series 12, Ultra 4, SE 3, WHOOP 5.0 or WHOOP MG.

Read the funding column before the winner column. The study that favors WHOOP most strongly, Miller 2022, comes from a lab that “receives support for research (i.e., funding, equipment) from WHOOP Inc.”, and WHOOP’s raw data there were “provided by the manufacturer”.10 The study that favors Apple, Schyvens 2025, lost Apple Watch data on 15 of 35 participants.11

Which is more accurate for HRV, Apple Watch or WHOOP?

On published evidence, WHOOP. The 2025 Air Force Research Laboratory–funded study by Dial and colleagues found WHOOP 4.0 showed “acceptable agreement” for overnight HRV.9 The closest Apple test, by O’Grady and colleagues at University College Dublin, found Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 underestimated HRV by 8.31 ms on average, with 28.88% error.36

Their conclusion was blunt: the findings “underscore the need for improved HRV algorithms in consumer wearables and caution in interpreting HRV data for clinical or performance monitoring.”36

Two caveats keep this from being a knockout. The protocols differ: Dial measured all night against a chest strap, O’Grady used morning five-minute readings with SDNN. And Series 12’s new Recovery HRV, sampled every five minutes overnight, hasn’t been independently tested.93631

Which is more accurate for heart rate?

Both are good at rest and steady effort. A 2026 meta-analysis led by Rory Lambe, with Doherty as senior author, reviewed 82 Apple Watch studies, 38 of them on heart rate, and found a pooled mean bias of −0.27 bpm.39 In Miller 2022, WHOOP 3.0’s overnight heart rate had an intraclass correlation of 0.99, against 0.96 for Apple Watch S6.10

Apple claims Series 12 has “the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable”, based on its own study of more than 1,000 people against WHOOP 5, Garmin, Google, Huawei, Samsung and Oura devices.126

Ray Maker found the real-world data “very good”, but pushed back on the study design. Series 12 skips data points when it isn’t confident, and Apple scored only the points it kept: “it was designed such that ‘no answer’ = ‘the correct answer’.” His verdict on rivals: “Is it better than its best competitors? Probably not; it seems about the same.”31

Which is more accurate for sleep tracking?

It’s a split. In Miller 2022, WHOOP 3.0 staged sleep better than Apple Watch S6 (κ 0.44 against 0.20), and Apple overestimated total sleep by 39.5 minutes.10 In Schyvens 2025, Apple Watch Series 8 led all six devices at κ 0.53, against 0.37 for WHOOP 4.0.11

The 2026 meta-analysis sided with WHOOP on balance: “agreement with polysomnography was lower for Apple Watch than for Whoop, Fitbit, and Garmin.”39 It also found Apple Watch good at telling sleep from wake but weak at telling deep sleep from light, which it tends to misclassify as light sleep.39

What this means for you: either device will tell you whether you slept six hours or eight. Neither will reliably tell you how much of it was deep sleep. Topol’s line holds for both: “Only resting heart rate has been shown consistently across devices to be extremely accurate.”29

Which is better for workouts and athletes, Apple Watch or WHOOP?

Apple Watch, for most training. It has a screen, built-in GPS, live heart rate on the wrist, running metrics and Training Load. WHOOP has no screen or GPS, but its Strain score, Strength Trainer and bicep wear suit lifters and team-sport athletes who want tracking without a watch. Many serious athletes wear both.71836

Apple’s Series 12 tech specs and WHOOP Support, checked 11 October 2026. ”—” means WHOOP’s pages we checked don’t list it.

Is WHOOP better than Apple Watch for serious athletes? For endurance athletes, rarely: no GPS and no screen means you still need a watch or a bike computer. Ray Maker’s one GPS complaint about Series 12 is that it lacks multiband GPS, which he notices “in everyday running”; Ultra 4 has dual-frequency GPS.3117

WHOOP earns its place with lifters and field-sport athletes. A 2025 study found the same WHOOP 4.0 had a 1.92% treadmill heart-rate error on the upper arm, against 5.95% on the wrist.41 If a watch gets in the way of your bar path or your sport’s rules, a bicep band doesn’t.

One data caveat for both: VO2 max estimates are rough. Lambe and colleagues found Apple Watch underestimated VO2 max by 6.07 mL/kg/min, and concluded the estimates “require further refinement prior to clinical implementation”.40 We found no peer-reviewed validation of WHOOP’s VO2 max.

For lifting on the wrist, SensAI’s Apple Watch app lets you start the day’s workout, adjust the weight of the current set and manage rest from the watch. See Introducing SensAI for Apple Watch.42

Which is better for health features, Apple Watch or WHOOP?

Apple Watch Series 12 includes ECG, irregular rhythm notifications, hypertension notifications, sleep apnea notifications and Blood Oxygen with no subscription. WHOOP puts ECG and Blood Pressure Insights on its $359-a-year Life tier, and its irregular-rhythm notifications aren’t offered in the US. WHOOP’s blood pressure is a cuff-calibrated wellness estimate; Apple’s gives no mmHg reading at all.7382423

How good is Apple’s hypertension notification?

Useful, with a big blind spot. Apple’s feature analyzes “how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart over 30-day periods” and alerts you to patterns of hypertension.19 The FDA cleared it in September 2025.45

A January 2026 commentary in Hypertension, led by Jordana B. Cohen, MD, MSCE, of the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, laid out the numbers from Apple’s FDA filing. Against home cuff monitoring, sensitivity was 41% and specificity 92%. “The main caveat,” the authors write, “is that 59% of individuals with undiagnosed hypertension wearing the Apple Watch will not be alerted.”23 Their conclusion: its “current performance is not suitable for largescale, reliable hypertension screening.”23

They also stress what it isn’t: “The Apple Watch does not actually measure BP.”23 Two of the six authors disclose owning Apple stock.23 So a notification is a reason to see a doctor, and no notification isn’t a clean bill of health.

How does WHOOP’s blood pressure feature work?

WHOOP Life estimates systolic and diastolic ranges each day from overnight heart rate, HRV and blood-flow patterns.24 You calibrate it with three readings from a traditional cuff, and WHOOP encourages recalibrating every 30 days.24 It’s for adults 18 and older, and WHOOP says it “is not a medical device and cannot diagnose or manage medical conditions.”24

It has a regulatory history. The FDA sent WHOOP a warning letter over the feature in July 2025, then closed it out in June 2026 after WHOOP changed the feature, consistent with a January guidance that relaxed oversight of wellness blood-pressure features.47

What about AFib detection?

Apple’s irregular rhythm notification has the bigger evidence base. The Apple-funded Apple Heart Study enrolled 419,297 people; 0.52% received a notification, and the positive predictive value for AFib on a simultaneous ECG patch was 0.84.48 The 2026 meta-analysis put pooled AFib detection at 0.79 sensitivity and 0.91 specificity.39

WHOOP’s ECG feature is FDA-cleared, but in the US only on Life.438 If AFib screening is why you’re buying, Apple Watch Series 12 gives you both ECG and passive notifications for a one-time $399.27

Can you wear WHOOP and Apple Watch together?

Yes. Many people wear Apple Watch on one wrist and WHOOP on the other or on the bicep. WHOOP can import Apple Watch workouts from Apple Health and pair them with its own heart rate. The catch is duplicates: if both write workouts to Apple Health, you’ll see them twice unless you turn one off.1312

Why wear both? WHOOP gives you a recovery score with weeks of battery; Apple Watch gives you a screen, GPS and health alerts. WHOOP’s support page says it can import “Workouts (e.g., running, cycling, strength training)”, “Workout routes (GPS-enabled activities)” and heart rate from Apple Health.13

What to set up so the data stays clean:

  • Pick one workout source for Apple Health. WHOOP warns that duplicates appear “if multiple sources, such as WHOOP and another app or device, are writing workout data to Apple Health at the same time,” and suggests you “disable ‘Workouts’ export from WHOOP in your Apple Health settings.”13 Our Help Center gives the same rule: “give each workout one path into Apple Health.”12
  • Know that imports overwrite. “If an imported Apple Health activity overlaps with an existing WHOOP auto-detected activity, the imported activity will overwrite the auto-detected one.”13
  • Don’t expect the same calories. WHOOP says it “uses a proprietary algorithm that factors in strain, heart rate, and recovery metrics”, so its totals won’t match Apple’s.13

Can you use WHOOP without the WHOOP band, or see WHOOP on your Apple Watch?

No to both, as far as WHOOP’s own pages show. The WHOOP iPhone app’s App Store listing says: “The WHOOP app requires a WHOOP wearable.”22 The listing shows no Apple Watch app, and WHOOP describes itself as screenless, with “all your data” in the WHOOP app.22

If you want WHOOP-style recovery scores from an Apple Watch alone, that’s what Readiness (Series 12 and Ultra 4) and apps like Athlytic and Bevel are for.43435

Do Apple Watch and WHOOP sync with Apple Health?

Yes, both write to Apple Health, but only Apple Watch writes HRV. Apple Watch workouts, heart rate, HRV, sleep and VO2 Max land there automatically. WHOOP writes sleep, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, workouts and workout calories, but not HRV, and Recovery and Strain stay in WHOOP.12

What this means if you use SensAI

SensAI reads Apple Health only. There is no WHOOP account to link inside it.12

With an Apple Watch, HRV reaches SensAI along with your workouts, heart rate, sleep and VO2 Max.12 With WHOOP alone, SensAI’s HRV tile reads “No recent value”, because WHOOP doesn’t share that number.12

WHOOP’s data still counts. In the Help Center’s words, “Sleep and overnight heart rate from your device shape how hard Coach asks you to push on a given day.”12 What never crosses is the WHOOP Recovery or Strain score itself.12

Wear both? Then Apple Watch supplies HRV and WHOOP supplies its share, as long as each workout reaches Apple Health only once.12

On privacy, SensAI reads your Apple Health data on the phone and “sends only aggregated recovery metrics and workout summaries to Coach”.12

To see what your device shares and how to connect it, read how to connect a wearable to SensAI through Apple Health.

Where SensAI falls short

  • It is not a wearable. You still need an Apple Watch, a WHOOP or another device that writes to Apple Health.12
  • Built for iPhone. SensAI runs on iPhone and Apple Watch, and the Watch app needs your iPhone nearby and connected, with iOS 26 or later and watchOS 26 or later.42
  • No HRV from WHOOP. If WHOOP is your only wearable, the HRV tile stays empty.12
  • Score history doesn’t transfer. Your WHOOP Recovery and Strain history stays in WHOOP.12
  • Limited history. SensAI syncs roughly the last 30 days of Apple Health workouts.12

Apple Watch or WHOOP: which one fits how you live and train?

Buy Apple Watch Series 12 for one device that does everything and costs less after year two. Buy SE 3 if price matters most and you can skip Readiness and ECG. Buy WHOOP One if you hate charging and screens, or want a bicep band. Choose WHOOP Life only for blood pressure or ECG; US members don’t get its AFib alerts.21438

Frequently asked questions

Is WHOOP or Apple Watch better for fitness tracking?

Apple Watch, for most people: it has a screen, built-in GPS, live heart rate on the wrist and Training Load. WHOOP suits people who want screenless tracking, multi-day battery and a Strain score, and it can be worn on the bicep.728186

Is Apple Watch or WHOOP better for recovery tracking?

On published accuracy, WHOOP has the stronger overnight HRV record, on WHOOP 4.0.936 On features, Apple Watch Series 12 now has its own Readiness score, which updates through the day, plus ECG and health alerts.47 Neither score’s formula is published.29

Why choose an Apple Watch over WHOOP?

No subscription, a screen, GPS, ECG, hypertension and irregular rhythm notifications, and apps. A $399 Series 12 is cheaper than WHOOP One from year three on.273 It’s also the only one of the two that sends HRV to Apple Health.12

What can WHOOP do that Apple Watch can’t?

Last up to 14+ days per charge, charge while you wear it, sit on your bicep, and track without a screen.618 WHOOP Life adds cuff-calibrated daily blood pressure estimates, which Apple Watch doesn’t offer.2423

Is the Apple Watch or WHOOP more accurate?

It depends on the metric. WHOOP 4.0 has better published overnight HRV agreement; Apple Watch Series 8 staged sleep better than WHOOP 4.0 in a 2025 study, while WHOOP 3.0 beat Apple Watch S6 in a 2022 study from a WHOOP-supported lab.9361110 Series 12 and WHOOP 5.0 are untested.

Apple Watch Series 12 vs WHOOP 5.0: which should I buy?

Series 12 if you want a smartwatch with Readiness, ECG and GPS for $399 once. WHOOP 5.0, through One at $199 a year or Peak at $239, if you want a screenless band with up to 14+ days of battery.236

How much does WHOOP cost compared with Apple Watch?

WHOOP is $199, $239 or $359 a year with a 12-month commitment. Apple Watch is a one-time $249 (SE 3), $399 (Series 12) or $799 (Ultra 4), with optional AppleCare+ from $29.99 a year.314215

Can you wear WHOOP and Apple Watch at the same time?

Yes. Wear them on opposite wrists, or WHOOP on the bicep. Let only one of them write workouts to Apple Health to avoid duplicates.1312

Does WHOOP work with Apple Watch?

Indirectly, through Apple Health: WHOOP can import Apple Watch workouts and routes.13 There is no WHOOP app on Apple Watch, and the WHOOP app “requires a WHOOP wearable”.22

Does WHOOP send HRV to Apple Health?

No. WHOOP calculates HRV as RMSSD and says it “does not export HRV data to Apple Health at this time.”13 Among the devices our Help Center covers, only Apple Watch shares HRV with Apple Health.12

Is WHOOP or Apple Watch better for health?

For medical-style alerts, Apple Watch Series 12: ECG, irregular rhythm, hypertension and sleep apnea notifications, all included.7 WHOOP’s health extras sit on Peak (Healthspan) and Life (ECG, blood pressure).3

Should you buy WHOOP if you already have an Apple Watch?

Usually not for recovery data alone. A Series 12 or Ultra 4 already gives you Readiness and Recovery HRV, and older watches can use Training Load, sleep score and recovery apps. WHOOP earns its $199–$359 a year if you want a second, screenless sensor for sleep, a bicep band for lifting, or WHOOP’s Strain coaching.428213

There’s an honest case for both. Ray Maker wore a WHOOP 5.0 MG on his bicep while testing Series 12, and plans a fuller head-to-head of the recovery scores.31 Some people simply sleep better without a watch on.

Keep the HRV question in mind. Apple Watch is the only device in our Help Center guide that shares HRV with Apple Health, so on iPhone it stays your HRV source whether or not you add a WHOOP.12

SensAI coaches from the data either device writes to Apple Health, on iPhone and Apple Watch.
