How do I edit sets during a workout?
Last updated
On your iPhone, open an exercise’s set list and tap the set you want to change. You can edit your current set, correct a completed set, or adjust upcoming sets while your workout is in progress.
Your rest timer keeps running while you browse and edit. Opening an upcoming exercise’s sets does not change your workout order.
Open the set list
You can reach the same set list from three places:
- While doing an exercise: tap the Set selector, which shows your position, such as 2 of 4.
- During rest: tap the set-progress control above the rest timer. It shows your completed-set progress, or View sets before you have completed a set.
- From the workout’s exercise list: tap an exercise row to see its sets, including exercises you haven’t started. The larger current-exercise card opens the tracker; from there, tap Set.
Tap any set row to open Edit Set. The arrow at the right of each row leads to its editor.
Edit just one set
- Open the set you want to change.
- Adjust its reps, weight, time, or distance. The available fields depend on the exercise. Check labels such as each or per side when entering values.
- Tap Update this set.
That saves only the selected set. Use it for a one-off adjustment or to correct what you recorded for a completed set.
In Edit Set, changes stay in the editor until you tap an Update button. The checkmark beside an input accepts that field’s value; you still need to tap an Update button to save. If you leave with unsaved changes, you can choose Keep Editing or Discard Changes.
Update matching remaining sets
When you’re editing an unfinished set, you may also see Update this and remaining sets. The explanation below the button tells you how many matching unfinished sets will receive the change.
Matching sets come later in the same exercise, are unfinished, have the selected set type, and match the measurements your selected set had before you edited it. Only the measurements you changed are copied.
For example, say a Normal set has 8 reps at 185 lb, and you change its weight to 195 lb. Choose Update this and remaining sets to apply that weight to later unfinished Normal sets that also had 8 reps at 185 lb. Completed sets, warm-ups, and sets with different reps or weights keep their values.
Choose Update this set if the change should apply only once. Corrections to completed sets always update just that set.
Correct an accidental completion
If you marked a set complete by mistake:
- Open that completed set from the set list.
- Turn off Completed.
- Tap Update this set.
The set keeps its measurements. The earliest unfinished set in your workout becomes the next set to perform, even if you have already completed a later set. Reopening a set in an earlier exercise can take you back to that exercise.
You can also correct a completed set’s recorded measurements without turning off Completed.
Change set type, add sets, or delete sets
- Change type: choose Normal, Warm-up, Drop Set, or Failure in the editor, then save. A type change affects only the selected set.
- Add a set: tap Add set at the bottom of the list. The new unfinished Normal set uses the last set’s measurements.
- Delete a set: open an eligible unfinished set, tap Delete set, and confirm. This also discards any unsaved edits to that set. The editor protects your current set and an exercise’s only set. To remove the current set, use Delete Set in the tracker’s menu.
Edit an upcoming exercise without starting it
Open that exercise from the workout’s exercise list, then edit its sets as usual. Browsing, editing, adding, or deleting sets leaves the exercise order unchanged and lets rest continue.
Tap Start Now only when you want to perform that exercise next. It moves the exercise ahead of your remaining exercises and ends active rest. The explanation below the button describes what will happen.
Can I do this on Apple Watch?
On Apple Watch, the pencil edits measurements for the current unfinished set. Its Sets and Exercises lists are for browsing. Use your iPhone to edit upcoming or completed sets, change set types, or add and delete sets.
These instructions apply to a workout in progress, including sets you have already completed in that workout.
