Most workout apps record what you lift. Juggernaut AI, RP Hypertrophy and Alpha Progression go a step further: they tell you what to lift next, and change the plan based on how your training went. They are the best-known “autoregulating” lifting apps, and they cost very different amounts.
Juggernaut AI was built by powerlifter and coach Chad Wesley Smith and is aimed at strength.1 RP Hypertrophy was designed by Dr. Mike Israetel of Renaissance Periodization and is aimed at muscle size.2 Alpha Progression is a German app that suggests your weight and reps set by set, and it has a permanent free version.34 A fourth app, MacroFactor Workouts, launched in January 2026 from the team behind the MacroFactor nutrition app, and now belongs in the same comparison.5
This guide compares all four on price, how each one adjusts your training, devices, health data and imports. Every price, limit and feature below was checked against each app’s US store listing and the developer’s own pages on 3 October 2026.
Juggernaut AI vs RP Hypertrophy vs Alpha Progression: the short answer
Juggernaut AI ($349.99/yr) is the strength and powerlifting app, adjusting your program from set ratings and a daily readiness check. RP Hypertrophy ($299.99/yr) is the muscle-size app, adjusting weekly sets from pump, soreness and workload feedback. Alpha Progression ($79.99/yr, or free with limits) suggests weight and reps set by set.678123

Three details are easy to miss. Juggernaut AI’s yearly plan is sold on its website, with bonuses including “2 months free” and a “30 min 1 on 1 consultation” with Chad Wesley Smith; the US App Store lists only the $34.99 monthly plan.61 RP’s App Store description mentions “a 6 month term”, but no six-month plan appears in its in-app purchase list or on its website.27 And RP’s money-back guarantee covers website purchases only. App Store refunds go through Apple.7
What do they cost over one and three years?
On published yearly prices, three years costs $1,049.97 for Juggernaut AI, $899.97 for RP Hypertrophy, $239.97 for Alpha Progression, $215.97 for MacroFactor Workouts and $209.97 for SensAI. Paid monthly for a year, Juggernaut AI and RP Hypertrophy each cost $419.88.678510

How does each app adjust your training?
Juggernaut AI adjusts before, during and between sessions from your set ratings and a readiness score. RP Hypertrophy adds or removes sets each week from pump, soreness and workload ratings. Alpha Progression and MacroFactor Workouts recalculate weight and reps from what you actually lifted, with optional reps-in-reserve ratings.1181314
| Juggernaut AI | RP Hypertrophy | Alpha Progression | MacroFactor Workouts | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main input | RPE on each set, daily readiness, end-of-session, week and block check-ins11 | Pump, soreness and workload ratings2 | Past performance, sets done today, planned targets, your gym’s weights13 | Performance, RIR targets, rep ranges14 |
| Effort scale | RPE11 | Feedback ratings, not RPE | RIR, optional; inferred if you skip it13 | RIR 0 to 6+, optional14 |
| What changes | Load and volume, “pre-session, intra-session, session to session, week to week, block to block”1 | Sets per muscle; load rises “a few percentage points each week”18 | Weight and reps, “set to set”3 | Weights and reps after each workout14 |

| Described as | “Expert system artificial intelligence”20 | Feedback-driven program2 | Algorithm with an estimated 10RM13 | “Rule-based logic, not generative AI”9 |
Juggernaut AI is the most aggressive about adjusting mid-session. Its warm-up ratings can raise the day’s target, for example “190 kg up to 192.5 kg”, and its 2.5 release added “Auto-Tuned Accessory Volume”: weekly check-ins that “automatically drop sets when your readiness score falls below 3”.2112 Chad Wesley Smith described the engine in 2021: “Our expert system artificial intelligence uses these factors to create a totally individualized program with more than 10 Quadrillion Variations.”20
RP Hypertrophy works mainly on volume. “Low pumps, barely sore, and rating workouts as easy = more sets,” its help center says, and “amazing pumps, so sore that you can’t heal on time, and too much volume = fewer sets.”18 When the next weight increment would fall outside your rep range, it adds a rep instead of weight.18
Alpha Progression works mainly on load. It keeps an estimated 10-rep max for each exercise and combines it with “the sets you have already completed in the current workout, your planned targets, and the weights available in your gym”.13 MacroFactor Workouts calls its version Smart Progression, and it makes its updates “as soon as you finish a workout” without changing your program’s structure.14
Does RPE and RIR autoregulation actually work?
Yes, for strength, though the evidence is modest. A meta-analysis of 8 studies in 166 athletes found autoregulated training beat fixed loading for maximum strength (effect size 0.64). In an 8-week trial, RPE-based and percentage-based squat programs both worked, with no significant difference between them.2223
| Study | Who | What it tested | Main result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zhang et al., 202122 | 8 studies, 166 athletes | Autoregulation vs fixed loading | Autoregulation better for maximum strength (ES 0.64, I² 0%) |
| Larsen et al., 202124 | 14 studies, 356 participants | Subjective and objective autoregulation | “All autoregulation training protocols resulted in an increase in 1-RM” |
| Helms et al., 201823 | 21 trained men, 8 weeks | RPE vs percentage-1RM loading | Squat +17.05 kg vs +13.91 kg, difference not significant |
| Helms et al., 201825 | 12 powerlifters | RPE “stops” to set volume | Volume can be autoregulated with RPE stops |
| Pelland et al., 202626 | 67 studies, 2,058 participants | Weekly volume | More volume helps size and strength, with diminishing returns |
Eric Helms and Michael Zourdos, whose lab built the RIR-based RPE scale,27 concluded from their 8-week trial that “both loading-types are effective. However, RPE-based loading may provide a small 1RM strength advantage in a majority of individuals.”2327 That is a fair summary of the field. Autoregulation is a sound way to set load, not a large advantage over a well-written fixed plan.
None of these studies tested an app. They tested coaches and researchers using RPE or RIR rules. Whether Juggernaut AI’s or RP’s specific rules match those results has not been published. For a deeper look at the method, see our guide to RPE and RIR autoregulation.
How accurate are your own RPE and RIR ratings?
Accurate to about one rep on average, with large individual differences. A meta-analysis of 12 studies found lifters underpredicted their reps to failure by 0.95 reps. Predictions were more accurate closer to failure, with heavier loads and in later sets. Training experience did not seem to matter.28
This matters because every app here asks you to rate effort: Juggernaut AI by RPE on each set, Alpha Progression and MacroFactor Workouts by optional RIR, and RP by rating each session’s workload against weekly RIR targets.1113141819 Halperin and colleagues found “considerable heterogeneity” in that 0.95-rep average (I² 97.9%), so some lifters are far off and some are close.28 In a 2024 bench-press study of 24 trained men and women, Refalo, Helms and colleagues found an average absolute error of 0.65 reps at 1 and 3 reps in reserve. They found no relationship between accuracy and sex, years of training or relative strength.29
Three practical rules follow from this:
- Rate heavy sets, not light ones. Ratings are more accurate close to failure and with heavier loads.28
- Rate later sets more confidently. Accuracy improved in later sets in the pooled data.28
- Use the optional rating if your app has one. Alpha Progression infers RIR when you skip it, and MacroFactor “strongly” recommends logging it.1314
Juggernaut AI vs RP Hypertrophy: which is better?
Juggernaut AI is better for strength and powerlifting: it periodizes the squat, bench and deadlift, adjusts within sessions and has meet-day tools. RP Hypertrophy is better for muscle size and is $50 a year cheaper. RP’s own help center recommends Juggernaut AI to lifters whose main goal is strength.1126730
| Juggernaut AI | RP Hypertrophy | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Powerlifting or powerbuilding;1 Bench Only and Strongman programs31 | Muscle growth2 |
| Yearly price | $349.996 | $299.997 |

| Web app | Not published | Yes, training.rpstrength.com7 |
| Designed by | Chad Wesley Smith, with Tim Arnold1 | Dr. Mike Israetel2 |
Both apps lean on the same idea: volume “landmarks” such as minimum effective volume (MEV) and maximum recoverable volume (MRV). RP’s Emphasize setting moves a muscle “from MEV (Minimum Effective Volume) up to MRV (Maximum Recoverable Volume)”, while Grow keeps you “closer to MEV”.32
These are coaching heuristics, not thresholds measured in controlled trials. What the research does show is that more weekly sets produce more growth, with diminishing returns. A 2017 meta-analysis by Brad Schoenfeld’s group found each additional weekly set added 0.37% to muscle gain.34 A 2026 meta-regression of 67 studies found the same shape, with diminishing returns “considerably more pronounced” for strength than for size.26 For more, see our guide to training volume per muscle per week.
On deloads, the evidence is thinner than either app’s design suggests. In a 39-person, 9-week trial co-authored by Israetel himself, a one-week deload at the midpoint “appears to negatively influence measures of lower body muscle strength but has no effect on lower body hypertrophy”.35 That is one small study, and it did not test RP’s app. Our guide to data-driven deload weeks covers the rest.
Israetel holds a doctorate in sport physiology from East Tennessee State University and co-founded RP with Nick Shaw.33 Smith founded Juggernaut Training Systems and has posted a top-10 all-time powerlifting total in wraps of 1,055 kg.20
RP Hypertrophy vs Alpha Progression: which is better?
Alpha Progression is better for most people who want muscle growth on a budget. It costs $79.99 a year against RP’s $299.99, has a free version and suggests weight and reps on every set. RP Hypertrophy is better if you want the app to manage your weekly volume per muscle and schedule your deloads.8743219
| RP Hypertrophy | Alpha Progression | |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly price | $299.997 | $79.998 |
| Free version | Not published | Unlimited logging, manual plans, 795 exercises with videos4 |

| Languages | English2 | 133 |
| App Store rating | 4.3 from 2342 | 4.9 from 2,1953 |
The two apps disagree about proximity to failure. RP asks how a session felt; Alpha Progression asks how many reps you had left. The research gives Alpha’s approach a reasonable footing for hypertrophy. A 2023 meta-analysis led by Martin Refalo found only a “trivial advantage” for training to failure (effect size 0.19), and a 2024 meta-regression from Zourdos’s lab found “muscle hypertrophy improves as sets are terminated closer to failure”, while “strength gains were similar across a wide range of RIR”.3738
Alpha Progression was founded by Benjamin Schnabel, a personal trainer, and Marwin Sinapius, who leads product, design and software development.839 It has been on the App Store since 2019.3
Juggernaut AI vs Alpha Progression: which is better?
Juggernaut AI is better if you compete in powerlifting or want a full strength program with meet-day tools. Alpha Progression is better for everyone else: it costs under a quarter as much, suggests weight and reps on every set and lets you log for free. Neither lists an Apple Watch app.684139
Juggernaut AI writes an entire periodized block around your squat, bench and deadlift, with a “Meet Day Tracking” feature added in version 3.0.12 Alpha Progression builds a plan from five splits and then manages each set’s target, but it does not periodize toward a competition.3613 If you compete, that difference decides it. If you lift to get stronger and bigger, the $270 a year gap is hard to justify.
Is MacroFactor Workouts better than Alpha Progression?
MacroFactor Workouts is cheaper ($71.99/yr vs $79.99) and adds Mac support, spreadsheet imports and a bundle with the MacroFactor nutrition app. Alpha Progression has a free version, more languages and more than six years more history. Both adjust weight and reps from what you lift, and both make RIR optional.58491314

MacroFactor’s five co-owners include Greg Nuckols and YouTube coach Jeff Nippard, whose technique videos are built into the app.419 Its research staff includes Dr. James Steele and Dr. Zac Robinson, both co-authors on studies cited in this guide.412838 You can import Nippard’s paid programs if you already own them.940 The two MacroFactor apps share body metrics, but the developer says “there are no shared coaching features or automatic program adjustments between nutrition and training”.9
How do the options compare, including SensAI?
Juggernaut AI suits competitive strength athletes. RP Hypertrophy suits lifters who want volume managed for size. Alpha Progression and MacroFactor Workouts suit lifters who want set-by-set weight targets for under $80 a year. SensAI ($69.99/yr) suits people who want a coach to write and adjust the plan in conversation.128510

Where Juggernaut AI, RP and Alpha Progression beat SensAI
All four lifting apps run on Android, while SensAI has no Android app; it is built for iPhone and Apple Watch.1610 All four also run on older iPhones: Juggernaut AI and Alpha Progression need iOS 15.6, RP needs iOS 17.6 and MacroFactor Workouts iOS 18, while SensAI needs iOS 26.132510 Juggernaut AI has meet-day tools and a periodized powerlifting block, which SensAI does not offer. Alpha Progression has a free version, and SensAI does not.12410
Where SensAI is different
SensAI is a coach you talk to, rather than a set of ratings you fill in.10 You can tell it “I tweaked my shoulder - adjust my week” and it rewrites the plan.10 For a lift you have never done, “SensAI estimates a starting point from your fitness data”, where Alpha Progression and MacroFactor wait until you have logged it.101314
SensAI reads Apple Health only: your watch or ring app writes to Apple Health, and SensAI reads from there.15 Apple Watch is the only device on SensAI’s list that shares HRV. As SensAI’s Help Center puts it, “Sleep and overnight heart rate from your device shape how hard Coach asks you to push on a given day.”15 To see what your device shares, read how to connect a wearable to SensAI through Apple Health.
Which devices do Juggernaut AI, RP and Alpha Progression support?
All three run on iPhone and Android. RP Hypertrophy also has a web app. None of the three lists an Apple Watch app, and MacroFactor Workouts’ Watch app is still in beta. Alpha Progression and MacroFactor sync workouts and body data with Apple Health; Juggernaut AI does not publish which data it reads.16739403142

The readiness question matters more than it looks. Juggernaut AI asks you to rate readiness yourself, and none of the three apps publishes that it reads heart rate variability or sleep from a wearable. The research supports looking at both. A 2024 review of HRV in strength and conditioning found “there is likely utility to HRV-guided programming”, while adding that “more data are needed”.44 A 2022 meta-analysis found acute sleep loss cut exercise performance by 7.56% on average.45 We found no meta-analysis testing HRV-guided programming for lifting specifically, so treat any app’s readiness score, SensAI’s included, as a guide rather than a verdict.
What changed in Juggernaut AI, RP and Alpha Progression in 2026?
Juggernaut AI was rebuilt from the ground up in version 3.0 on 11 August 2026, adding a 0–100 readiness score and meet-day tracking. Alpha Progression added 11 languages between July and September, reaching 13. RP Hypertrophy’s 2026 updates were small, and its latest was a bug-fix release. MacroFactor Workouts launched on 12 January 2026.112325

Juggernaut AI vs RP Hypertrophy vs Alpha Progression: which is the best autoregulation app?
The best autoregulation lifting app depends on your goal and budget. If you compete in powerlifting, choose Juggernaut AI. If you want muscle size and want the app to manage your volume, choose RP Hypertrophy. If you want set-by-set targets for under $80 a year, choose Alpha Progression, or MacroFactor Workouts if you already use MacroFactor.1285
Choose Juggernaut AI if you:
- Compete in powerlifting or strongman, or want a periodized squat, bench and deadlift block
- Will rate RPE honestly on every set and check in on readiness daily
- Can justify $349.99 a year, or want the yearly plan’s consultation with Chad Wesley Smith
Choose RP Hypertrophy if you:
- Train mainly for muscle size and want weekly sets adjusted for you
- Want deloads scheduled automatically at the end of each block
- Like training from a browser as well as a phone
Choose Alpha Progression if you:
- Want weight and rep targets on every set without paying RP or Juggernaut prices
- Want to start free and upgrade later
- Train in a language other than English
Choose MacroFactor Workouts if you:
- Already use MacroFactor for nutrition and want the $89.99 bundle
- Run Jeff Nippard programs or keep your plans in spreadsheets
Look elsewhere if you:
- Want a coach you can talk to, who adjusts the plan from what you tell it and from your Apple Health data. That is what SensAI does. Our guide to AI-driven progressive overload explains the difference.
- Need an Apple Watch app today. None of the four lists one outside beta.
Frequently asked questions
Most questions come down to price, free versions, Apple Watch support and imports. Juggernaut AI costs $349.99 a year, RP Hypertrophy $299.99 and Alpha Progression $79.99 with a free version. None of the three lists an Apple Watch app, and none publishes a way to import history from other apps.678413943
Juggernaut AI review: is it worth it?
For competitive powerlifters, probably: it periodizes the main lifts, adjusts within sessions and tracks meet days. For general strength training, $349.99 a year is hard to justify when Alpha Progression costs $79.99. The website lists a 2-week free trial on both plans.6128
Is RP Hypertrophy worth it?
It is worth it if you want an app to manage weekly volume per muscle and schedule deloads, and you are happy at $299.99 a year. If you mainly want weight targets, Alpha Progression does that for less. RP does not publish a free trial; its 30-day money-back guarantee covers website purchases only.73219
Is Alpha Progression free?
Partly. The free version includes unlimited workout logging, manually created plans and all 795 exercises with videos, with no ads. The plan generator, weight and rep recommendations and charts need Pro, which costs $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year.48
Juggernaut AI vs RP Hypertrophy: which is better for strength?
Juggernaut AI. It is built around powerlifting and periodizes the squat, bench and deadlift. RP’s own help center says that for lifters whose main objective is strength, “we generally recommend the Juggernaut AI app”.130
Does Juggernaut AI (JuggernautAI) work with Apple Watch?
No Apple Watch app is listed on its App Store page. Juggernaut AI does integrate with Apple Health and Health Connect, but it does not publish which data it reads.131
Does RP Hypertrophy have an Android app?
Yes. RP Hypertrophy launched on Google Play in December 2025, alongside its native iOS app. It also still runs in a web browser.16467
Can I import my workouts into these apps?
Mostly no. Alpha Progression and RP Hypertrophy cannot import history from another app. MacroFactor Workouts imports workouts and programs from .xlsx spreadsheets, but not from other apps. Juggernaut AI does not publish an import option.39439
Do these apps use HRV or sleep data?
None of the four publishes that it adjusts training from wearable HRV or sleep. Juggernaut AI’s version 3.0 tracks sleep and bodyweight trends alongside your workouts, and asks you to rate readiness yourself. SensAI reads sleep and overnight heart rate from Apple Health, and HRV from Apple Watch.1215
The bottom line
Juggernaut AI and RP Hypertrophy are the specialist, premium options: Juggernaut AI for strength and powerlifting at $349.99 a year, RP for muscle size at $299.99. Alpha Progression and MacroFactor Workouts give most lifters the core of autoregulation, set-by-set weight and rep targets, for about a quarter of the price.6785
The research supports the idea behind all four. Autoregulated training beat fixed loading for strength in pooled studies, and lifters can rate their reps in reserve to within about a rep.2228 It does not show that any one app’s rules are better than another’s. Those comparisons have not been published.
All four apps work from what you rate and log. If you would rather explain what is going on, from a tweaked shoulder to a bad night’s sleep, and have the plan rewritten around it, a conversational coach like SensAI fits better.
