Get a training plan that adapts to your recovery — free on iOS
Future sells you a real, certified personal trainer on your phone for $199 a month.12 In June 2026 it went further and cancelled the free AI coaching product it had been building, telling its waitlist it would “double down” on human coaches instead.3 Its App Store listing, “Future Pro: Personal Training,” holds a 4.9 average from 10,703 ratings.1
The question is whether a remote human coach is worth roughly $1,788 to $2,239 in your first year. That is what this Future app review answers, along with how the coaching works, what it does with your watch, and which Future alternatives cost less.
Every price, plan and policy below was checked against Future’s App Store and Google Play listings, its help center and its own site on 27 September 2026.
Future app review: the short answer
Future pairs you with one certified human coach who writes your program, adjusts it weekly and messages you in the app. As of September 2026 it costs $50 for the first month, then $199/month, or $149/month prepaid for a year. It is US-only, runs on iPhone and Android, and offers a 30-day refund.245

How much does the Future app cost in 2026?
Future costs $199 a month, with a homepage offer of $50 for the first month. Prepaying lowers the rate: $537 for 3 months ($179/mo), $1,014 for 6 months ($169/mo) or $1,788 for 12 months ($149/mo). Membership is billed outside the App Store, by Apple Pay or credit card, as of September 2026.2418
| Plan | Total charged | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $199 | $199 |
| 3 Months | $537 | $179 |
| 6 Months | $1,014 | $169 |
| 12 Months | $1,788 | $149 |
Future’s published plan prices, from its help center (updated 5 February 2026) and checked 27 September 2026.4
A few details matter before you pay:
- The $50 first month. Future’s homepage says “$50 first month, then $199/month.”2 Future does not say whether that offer also applies to the 3, 6 or 12-month prepaid plans, so ask before you choose one.
- No App Store purchase. Future’s App Store listing shows no in-app purchases, so you pay Future itself.1 It accepts Apple Pay or a credit card. Debit cards and non-US payment methods are not accepted.18
- The $199 price dates from 2023. In June 2023 Future raised the monthly price to $199 and set the annual plan at $149 a month.19
- HSA/FSA. Future offers reimbursement through Truemed, which requires an eligibility evaluation and a Letter of Medical Necessity.17
What does Future cost over one and three years?
Here is the full cost, with the cheaper apps alongside it for scale.
| Plan | Year 1 | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Future Monthly | $2,239 | $7,015 |
| Future, 3-month prepays | $2,148 | $6,444 |
| Future, 6-month prepays | $2,028 | $6,084 |
| Future, 12-month prepay | $1,788 | $5,364 |
| Trainwell | $1,788 | $5,364 |
| Caliber Premium Coaching | ~$2,400 | ~$7,200 |
| In-person trainer (Meier’s example, $360/mo) | $4,320 | $12,960 |
| Ladder PRO Annual | $179.99 | $539.97 |
| Fitbod | $95.99 | $287.97 |
| SensAI | $69.99 | $209.97 |
Our arithmetic from published prices, 27 September 2026. Future Monthly includes the $50 first month; the prepay rows do not, because Future does not say the offer applies to them. The in-person row is Kate Meier’s 2024 illustration: three 30-minute sessions a week at $1 a minute.20
Two things stand out. Future’s yearly prepay and Trainwell cost exactly the same, $1,788 a year. And SensAI costs about 3–4% of Future’s first year. That is not because SensAI is a cheaper Future. It is a different product with no human coach, which we cover below.
Does Future have a free trial, and can you cancel for a refund?
Future has no free plan or free trial. Instead, the first month is risk-free: its homepage says “Cancel within 30 days for a full refund.” After that, monthly plans get no partial-month refunds, and cancelled prepaid plans are refunded after each used month is charged at the $199 standard price.221
Future’s refund policy, from its help center (updated 27 March 2026):21
- Monthly plans: no refunds for partial months.
- Prepaid plans: you get back the unused portion, but every month you used is recalculated at $199. Cancel a $1,788 12-month plan after 4 months and, by our arithmetic, you would get back $1,788 − (4 × $199) = $992. That is our illustration, not a figure Future publishes.
- Non-usage: “We do not issue refunds for months in which you did not complete workouts or message your coach.”
Other terms worth knowing:
- Billing starts with your first workout. Your first month begins on the day of your first scheduled workout, and plans auto-renew.22
- Pausing. After 90 active days you can pause for one to two months.23
- Switching coaches. Changing coaches is free, with no limit on how often.24
How does the Future fitness app work?
Future matches you with one certified coach who holds a kickoff call, builds a custom program, and adjusts it every week. Your workouts play in the app with your coach’s recorded voice, and you message the same person in a Messages tab. Google Play’s listing adds video calls with your trainer and a weekly activity review.62512
Here is how a membership runs, according to Future’s help center and store listings:
- Kickoff call. You schedule a virtual Kickoff Call to meet your coach and share your story.6
- Custom program. Your coach builds your custom program and notifies you in the app when it is ready.6
- Guided sessions. Each workout plays in the app, guided by your coach’s recorded voice, drawing on a library of more than 2,000 exercises.25
- Messaging. You and your coach talk in the Messages tab. Future’s help center describes your coach as “a real person.”6
- Weekly adjustments. Your coach updates the plan as you go. Google Play’s listing says “Your trainer reviews your activity each week” and mentions “video calls with your trainer.”12
Inside a workout, Future gives you tools that feed information back to your coach:25
- Flag swaps out an exercise.
- Report Your Reps and Adjust Your Weight show your coach what you actually did.
- Repeat Cues replays the instructions.
- Record My Form captures a short video for your coach.
- Exercise History shows your past weights and reps.
Future describes its coaches as “certified fitness professionals” and “elite, certified coaches.”2627 It also claims “nearly a decade and more than 8 million coaching sessions.”28 At the time of its January 2025 merger with Autograph, it said that on average members “exchange 1,000 text messages with their coach each year, and complete over 150 training sessions.”29 Those are Future’s own figures, not independent measurements.
Does the Future app use AI?
Future’s coaching is human, but its coaches use AI behind the scenes. Assistant Coach AI, launched in January 2025, is a coach-side tool. In February 2026 Future split off a free AI coaching beta, then cancelled it in June 2026 to “double down” on human coaches. As of September 2026, members do not get an AI coach.303
Future introduced Assistant Coach AI in January 2025 as a tool for its coaches, built from its own models and large language models.30 It sits behind the coach, not in front of you.
The consumer AI product had a shorter life. Athletech News reporter Courtney Rehfeldt reported that Future split into Future Pro and a free AI beta in February 2026, then scrapped the beta.3 Future’s note to waitlisted members, quoted by Athletech, said: “we’ve decided not to move forward with launching that product… double down on what we do best: helping people make real progress with the support of world-class coaches.”3
That leaves a clear split in the market. If you want AI to write and adapt your program, that is a different kind of app. SensAI is one: an AI coach in the Coach tab that builds next week’s program from the sessions you log and from the workouts, sleep and heart rate your devices write to Apple Health.16 We compare the main options in our guide to the best AI personal trainer apps in 2026.
What changed at Future in 2025 and 2026?
Future merged with Tom Brady’s Autograph in January 2025, launched a coach-side AI tool the same month, split off and then cancelled a free AI beta in 2026, and added health-coaching tiers. As of September 2026 Future’s About page lists Ali Jafari as CEO, with Tom Brady as Co-Chairman.2930328
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Nov 2017 | Future’s app is first released on the App Store1 |
| Feb 2022 | $75M round co-led by SC.Holdings and Trustbridge; $110M raised to date, per Fitt Insider, a Future investor31 |
| Jun 2023 | Monthly price rises to $199; annual plan set at $149/month. Future said then that “coaches remain full-time employees”19 |
| Jan 2025 | Assistant Coach AI launches as a coach-side tool30 |
| Jan 2025 | Future merges with Autograph; co-founder Rishi Mandal named CEO at the time29 |
| Feb 2026 | Future splits into Future Pro and a free AI beta3 |
| Jun 2026 | AI beta cancelled; Athletech describes the new health tiers as “two beta tiers”3 |
| Sep 24, 2026 | iOS app version 2026.16 released1 |
Sources as footnoted. The full-time-employees statement is from June 2023 and was not re-confirmed for 2026.
Future’s About page lists Ali Jafari as CEO. Its board includes Tom Brady as Co-Chairman and Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue.28
At the merger, Tom Brady, Autograph’s co-founder, described the pitch: “With Future’s technology, we have an exciting opportunity to provide personalized 1-on-1 coaching on a large scale, allowing our members to be empowered and supported in achieving their goals and sustaining peak performance over time.”29
Does Future work with Apple Watch, Garmin and other wearables?
Future works with Apple Watch Series 4 and newer on iPhone, and with Wear OS 3.0 or newer on Android. A watch is “not required—but highly recommended.” Future’s FAQ lists Garmin under Wear OS watches, but Garmin watches run Garmin’s own software, not Wear OS, so confirm Garmin support with Future before you rely on it.3215
What Future’s help center and store listings say:
- A watch is optional. Future calls a smartwatch “not required—but highly recommended.”32
- Supported watches. Apple Watch Series 4 and newer for iPhone users; any Wear OS 3.0+ watch for Android users.15
- Heart rate from other devices. The FAQ says: “Any wearable that has bluetooth broadcasting capabilities will enable your Future Pro Coach to see your heart rate data.”15
- Health Connect on Android. Future can read workouts, steps, distance, calories, weight, resting heart rate and heart rate, and write workouts and weight.12
| Device | Future | SensAI |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Yes, Series 4 and newer15 | Yes, through Apple Health; the only device that shares HRV with SensAI16 |
| Wear OS watches | Yes, Wear OS 3.0+15 | — |
| Garmin | Listed in the FAQ, but Garmin is not Wear OS; confirm with Future15 | Workouts, heart rate and sleep via Garmin Connect → Apple Health; no HRV or Body Battery16 |
| Oura | — | Sleep, heart rate and workouts via Apple Health; no HRV or Readiness16 |
| WHOOP | — | Sleep, resting heart rate and workouts via Apple Health; no HRV, Recovery or Strain16 |
| Health platform | Health Connect on Android12 | Apple Health on iPhone16 |
From Future’s help center and Google Play listing, and SensAI’s Help Center guide (last updated 25 September 2026), checked 27 September 2026.
SensAI connects through Apple Health, not to Garmin, Oura or WHOOP themselves. Each device’s own app writes to Apple Health, and SensAI reads from there, so there are no vendor accounts to link.16 Setup takes two switches; our Help Center guide walks through each device.
Is Future’s coaching science-backed?
The evidence for supervised training is real but mostly in-person. A UCLA-led trial found trainer-led members gained 1.3 kg of lean mass while self-directed members gained none, and supervised lifters chose heavier loads. Remote coaching has thinner evidence, and one 18-month trial found trainers raised attendance without improving long-term weight loss.333435
What the research on supervised training shows:
- More muscle and strength. In a 12-week study of 34 men aged 30 to 44, led by Thomas Storer at UCLA, the trainer-led group gained 1.3 kg of lean body mass while the self-directed group had no change. Chest press strength rose 42% versus 19%, VO2max rose 7% versus −0.3%, and leg power rose 6% versus 0.6%.33 One of the study’s affiliations is Equinox Fitness Clubs, where it ran.
- Heavier loads. A team including William Kraemer found supervised lifters trained with heavier loads and progressed faster.34
- Harder effort. Women training with a personal trainer chose higher intensities and reported higher effort than those training alone.36
- Better results in older adults. A University of Potsdam meta-analysis of 11 studies found supervised training beat unsupervised training on balance and strength in older adults (strength effect size 0.51). The authors rated study quality as moderate.37
- Attendance is not results. In an 18-month trial of 193 people at the University of Minnesota, trainers who walked with participants and phoned reminders raised attendance, but long-term weight loss did not improve.35
Almost all of this is in-person supervision, and Future is remote. The closest remote evidence is clinical: a 2025 Juntendo University trial of 50 patients with coronary artery disease, all wearing a Fitbit Sense, found weekly online coaching raised daily distance and highly active time in the second half of the program, with no difference between groups in peak VO2.38 Treat that as analogous, not as proof that app coaching works for healthy lifters.
Kate Meier, NASM-CPT, Head of Content at Garage Gym Reviews and a Future user, put the price in context: “as a certified personal trainer, I can tell you that hiring a certified personal trainer will cost you a lot more. A pretty average rate for personal training is $1 a minute (though most trainers will charge you more than that).” Her example: “three, 30-minute sessions a week, that’s $90 a week, or $360 a month.”20 Her review was last updated in May 2024.
One limit to know: Future Pro coaches do not create meal plans, prescribe calorie or macro targets, or diagnose.26
Does Future help with progress and consistency?
Future claims 98% of members “say they’re more consistent within 4 weeks,” but that is its own survey figure. Independent research is more useful: goal setting, self-monitoring and feedback on outcomes are the techniques that predict lasting change, and a coach, human or AI, is one way to deliver them.23940
What the behavior-change research says:
- The techniques that matter. A University of Bergen meta-regression found goal setting and self-monitoring predicted effects in both the short and long term, while feedback on outcomes and graded tasks predicted long-term effects.39
- Self-monitoring plus a second technique. Susan Michie’s UCL team analysed 122 evaluations covering 44,747 people. Interventions that combined self-monitoring with another self-regulation technique outperformed the rest (effect size 0.42 vs 0.26).40
- Apps and trackers help, modestly. A University of Sydney meta-analysis of 35 studies (28 pooled, 7,454 people) found apps and trackers raised physical activity with a small-to-moderate effect (SMD 0.35), about 1,850 more steps a day.41
- Trackers at scale. A University of South Australia umbrella review covering 163,992 participants found trackers added about 1,800 steps a day and 40 minutes of walking a day, with about 1 kg of weight loss.42
- The effect fades. A review of 9 app trials (6 pooled) found a non-significant 477 extra steps a day overall, with apps most effective in the first 3 months.43
SensAI delivers the same techniques without a person: goals you set, workouts you log, and a coach that responds to what you actually did. That is honestly not the same as a human who knows you. A large 2026 survey suggests many people still want one.
Les Mills’ 2026 Global Fitness Report, with more than 10,000 respondents, found only 10% preferred an AI coach, while 52% preferred a human trainer (31% strongly, 21% leaning) and 37% were undecided.44 Bryce Hastings, Head of Research at Les Mills, said: “Technology is shaping fitness in countless ways, but nothing beats the buzz of a live class and these findings show we remain social animals when it comes to working out.”44
What workouts does Future include: home, gym and running?
Future programs strength and conditioning sessions from a library of more than 2,000 exercises, built around whatever equipment you have, including none. You do not need a gym, and your coach can adapt your plan when you travel. Future is available only in the US.2545465
Home workouts
You do not need a gym membership. Future’s help center says your coach designs workouts around your available space and equipment, “even if that’s nothing but your bodyweight.”45 When you travel, your coach adjusts the program to where you are.46
Running workouts
The Future help pages we checked describe strength and guided workouts, not a dedicated running-plan product. If running is your main goal, raise it on your kickoff call and ask your coach what they can program before you commit.
Global availability
Future Pro is US-only. You need a US payment method, a US phone number and a US App Store account.5
What does Future health coaching cost?
Future’s health coaching starts at $129 a month (“$4/day”) for Core and $399 a month (“$13/day”) for Premium, both billed monthly. Core adds a fitness, food and sleep plan with weekly check-ins; Premium adds weekly 1:1 calls, 80+ biomarkers and quarterly body scans. Future says it is “not medical care.”47
| Tier | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $129/mo (“$4/day”), billed monthly | Personalized fitness, food and sleep plan; weekly check-ins; monthly 1:1 coaching call; weekly food-log review |
| Premium | $399/mo (“$13/day”), billed monthly | Everything in Core, plus daily support and weekly 1:1s; 80+ biomarkers and quarterly body scans; quarterly registered-dietitian session and a supplement plan |
From Future’s health-coaching page, checked 27 September 2026.47
The page carries a clear disclaimer: “Future provides health and fitness coaching, not medical care.”47 Athletech News described Core and Premium as “two beta tiers” in June 2026, so expect them to change.3 The page also says “Trusted by 100,000+ members,” which is Future’s own claim.47
Future vs Trainwell vs Caliber: which human coach app is better?
Trainwell is the closest like-for-like: a 1:1 human trainer at $149/month billed quarterly, with 14 days free. Caliber Premium Coaching runs about $200/month as a 3-month program with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Future costs the most month to month but matches Trainwell on its yearly prepay.7108114

Future Pro vs Ladder
Ladder and Future both put a human behind your program, but not the same way. On Ladder PRO, a coach writes one weekly plan for a whole team, and 1:1 contact is reserved for its higher tiers. On Future, one coach writes for you alone. That difference is most of the $1,600-a-year price gap. Our Ladder app review covers how its teams work.
Future vs an AI coach app: what do you give up?
You give up a real person. Future’s coach reviews your form videos, voices your workouts and knows your life; an AI coach does not. What you gain is price, about 3–4% of Future’s first year with SensAI, and a coach that reads your training and recovery data every day.25916
Where Future wins, plainly:
- A real person. Someone who knows your history and notices when you go quiet.6
- Form review. Record My Form sends your coach a video to check.25
- Your coach’s voice. Workouts are guided by your own coach’s recorded cues.25
- Android and Wear OS. Future runs on both.1215
- Health coaching. Nutrition, sleep and biomarker tiers are available if you want them.47
Where SensAI fits:
- Price. $69.99 a year, about 3–4% of Future’s first-year cost.9
- Your whole week. SensAI reads the workouts, heart rate and sleep that apps like Garmin Connect, Oura, WHOOP, COROS, Polar and Google Health (for Fitbit) write to Apple Health.16
- HRV from Apple Watch only. Apple Watch is the only device that shares HRV with SensAI; vendor scores like Readiness, Recovery and Body Battery stay in their own apps.16
- Recovery-aware sessions. Sleep and overnight heart rate from your device shape how hard Coach asks you to push on a given day.16
If you are still deciding between the two models, our breakdown of AI vs human personal trainers walks through who each one suits.
Is the Future app worth it?
Future is worth it if accountability to a real person is what keeps you training and $1,788 to $2,239 a year fits your budget. It is not worth it if you mostly need a good program, live outside the US, or want meal plans. The 30-day refund makes it cheap to test.24526
Future is a good fit if you:
- Have started and stopped programs before, and know a person checking in is what changes that.
- Want someone to watch your form on video and correct it.
- Can prepay a year, which brings the rate to $149 a month.4
- Live in the US and use an iPhone with Apple Watch, or Android with Wear OS.515
Look elsewhere if you:
- Want the same 1:1 model for less; Trainwell is $149 a month billed quarterly.7
- Want a free trial before paying anything; Trainwell offers 14 days, SensAI 7.109
- Need meal plans or calorie targets; Future Pro coaches do not provide them.26
- Live outside the US.5
- Mostly need adaptive programming, not a person; an AI coach costs a fraction of the price.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Future app cost?
Future costs $199 a month, with a homepage offer of $50 for the first month. Prepaid plans cost $537 for 3 months, $1,014 for 6 months or $1,788 for 12 months ($149/month), as of September 2026.24
Is there a free version or free trial of Future?
No. Future has no free plan or free trial. Instead, you can cancel within 30 days for a full refund.221
Can I cancel Future and get a refund?
Yes, within the first 30 days. After that, monthly plans get no partial-month refunds, and cancelled prepaid plans are refunded after each used month is charged at $199. Future does not refund months in which you did not complete workouts or message your coach.21
Does Future use AI coaching?
Not for members. Your coach is human and uses a coach-side tool called Assistant Coach AI. Future cancelled its free AI coaching beta in June 2026.303
Does Future work with Garmin?
Future’s FAQ lists Garmin under Wear OS watches, but Garmin watches run Garmin’s own software, not Wear OS. Its FAQ also says any wearable that broadcasts heart rate over Bluetooth lets your coach see heart rate data. Confirm with Future before relying on a Garmin.15
Is Future available on Android?
Yes. Future’s Google Play app holds a 4.4 rating from 387 reviews and 10K+ downloads, works with Wear OS 3.0+, and can connect to Health Connect.12
Can I use Future outside the US?
No. Future Pro requires a US payment method, a US phone number and a US App Store account.5
Can I use my HSA or FSA for Future?
Possibly. Future offers HSA/FSA reimbursement through Truemed, which requires an eligibility evaluation and a Letter of Medical Necessity.17
Is Future better than Trainwell?
They offer the same model: a 1:1 remote trainer. Trainwell is cheaper month to month ($149 billed quarterly) and has a 14-day free trial; Future costs the same only on its 12-month prepay and adds optional health coaching.710447
Does Future include meal plans?
No. Future Pro coaches do not create meal plans, prescribe calorie or macro targets, or diagnose. Nutrition support sits in Future’s separate health-coaching tiers.2647
The bottom line
Future is a genuine human coach in an app, and in 2026 it bet its product on that, cancelling its free AI beta. At $199 a month, or $149 prepaid yearly, it costs less than a typical in-person trainer but far more than any app. Pay for it if a person keeping you accountable is the missing piece.4320
If you want the same model for less, Trainwell matches Future’s yearly rate on a quarterly bill. If what you need is a program that adapts to your training and recovery rather than a person, an AI coach like SensAI covers that for $69.99 a year.
