Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify are three of the most-downloaded home-workout apps, with 10M+ Google Play installs each. BetterMe alone holds 713K ratings in the US. Freeletics carries Apple’s Editors’ Choice badge, and Fitify has the highest average rating of the three at 4.9 stars.123
All three promise a plan built around you, but each means something different by that. Freeletics adjusts your next session from the feedback you give after the last one. BetterMe builds a program from a sign-up quiz and adds meal plans. Fitify says its AI Coach runs on OpenAI’s GPT-5.145
Every price, limit and feature below was checked against each app’s US App Store listing and the developers’ own pages on 30 September 2026.
Freeletics vs BetterMe vs Fitify: the short answer
Freeletics suits bodyweight HIIT and strength with a Coach that adapts to your feedback. BetterMe suits weight loss, pairing 4,000+ workouts with meal plans, but its many subscription prices need care. Fitify ($69.99/yr) suits short home workouts with an AI Coach. Only Freeletics has been studied in peer-reviewed research.1236

How much do Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify cost?
Fitify is the easiest to price: Fitify Pro is $69.99 a year. Freeletics lists six Training Coach plans at four prices from $34.99 to $79.99, across 3-, 6- and 12-month plans. BetterMe lists ten products from a $4.99 weekly plan to $41.99, and its discounted offers renew at full price.1239
| In-app purchase (US) | Freeletics | BetterMe | Fitify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest listed price | $34.99 (Training Coach1) | $4.99 (weekly2) | $6.49 (Pro monthly3) |
| Highest listed price | $89.99 (Training and Nutrition1) | $41.992 | $69.99 (yearly3) |

| Refund promise | “14-day money-back guarantee”1 | Web refunds “at our own discretion”9 | Fees “final and non-refundable”3 |
Why do these apps list so many prices?
Subscription apps often keep older plans, introductory offers and regional tests live on the same listing. The App Store shows all of them in one list, so a single number rarely tells you what you will pay.
BetterMe is the one to read carefully. Its subscription terms say discounted offers “renew at the full not discounted price”. They also say “deleting the app does not cancel your subscriptions” and “canceling one plan does not cancel the others”.9 Before you start a trial, note the renewal price on the checkout screen and set a reminder for the day before it renews.

Is Freeletics, BetterMe or Fitify free?
Freeletics has the most clearly defined free tier: 34 HIIT bodyweight workouts and 100+ exercises, with no Coach. Fitify is free to download with “selected workouts” and charges for plans and the AI trainer. BetterMe’s own pages describe no free tier.123
Freeletics says its free version gives you “many of our top signature workouts” plus a library of exercises, runs and audio sessions. The paid Coach adds the personalized plan.1
Fitify is free to download and “includes access to selected workouts”. Fitify Pro adds “personalized training plans, AI personal trainer, and a wider range of workouts.”3
BetterMe’s App Store listing, help center and subscription terms describe paid plans and trials, but no free tier.279
If you want free workouts with no subscription at all, our best home workout apps with no equipment guide lists more options.
How does each app personalize your workouts?
Freeletics’ Coach changes your next session based on the effort and completion feedback you give after each workout. BetterMe builds a program from a sign-up quiz about your goals and habits. Fitify’s AI Coach runs on GPT-5 and uses your logged gym weights to build the next workout.1475
Freeletics: a Coach that reads your feedback
Freeletics says its AI Coach “customizes each workout to your fitness level, adjusting in real time based on your feedback”. It draws on 700+ exercises and 30 fitness plans.1 Its help center is plain about what the Coach is: “not a real person”, but “a digital program that uses the state of the art artificial intelligence to adjust your training plan”.4
Workouts run 15 to 45 minutes, and many need no equipment.1 Freeletics also programs gym and home equipment, and in 2025 its Decathlon partnership added 17 new equipment options, including gym machines, and over 300 new exercises.10
BetterMe review: a plan from your quiz
BetterMe builds your program “based on your quiz answers, considering your lifestyle, habits, fitness level, and goals”.7 Its App Store listing makes no AI claim for workouts. The AI feature in its help center is a food scanner in the calorie tracker.27
BetterMe is broader than the other two. It lists more than 4,000 home workouts across Pilates, calisthenics, strength, yoga and walking. It adds 20+ meal plans, intermittent fasting, and water and step trackers, and sells its own fitness tracker and smart scale.27
Fitify: an AI Coach built on GPT-5
In August 2025, Fitify said its “AI Coach now runs on OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 model”, which it calls a “24/7 personal trainer who knows your training plan, your progress, and your preferences”. The Coach takes voice chat and photos, and offers “injury-friendly modifications”.5
Fitify says it has over 900 exercises and workouts of 15 to 25 minutes. They use bodyweight or kit such as kettlebells, TRX, resistance bands, dumbbells and a pull-up bar.3 Recent release notes say “gym weight logs are used when Fitify builds your next workout”.3
Does the research back these apps?
No trial has tested Freeletics, BetterMe or Fitify against a control group. Their methods are well supported, though: bodyweight training builds strength, short HIIT raises fitness, and effort ratings are a valid way to steer training. Freeletics is the only one of the three with peer-reviewed studies.111261314
Bodyweight training builds strength
In an 8-week trial by Kikuchi and Nakazato at Nippon Sport Science University, push-ups raised bench-press 1RM from 61.1 to 64.2 kg. A matched low-load bench press group rose from 60.0 to 65.0 kg. The authors concluded push-ups were “comparably effective” for muscle and strength.11 That supports the bodyweight core of Freeletics and Fitify.
Short HIIT sessions raise fitness
A 2024 umbrella review pooled 24 systematic reviews with 12,967 participants. HIIT raised cardiorespiratory fitness by 3.25 to 5.5 mL/kg/min compared with no exercise, including home-based and whole-body HIIT.12 Martin Gibala, a kinesiologist at McMaster University and a co-author, has also shown that three brief stair-climbing “snacks” a day modestly improved fitness in sedentary young adults.15 The 15-to-25-minute sessions these apps sell are enough to count.
Effort ratings are a valid way to steer training
Freeletics steers your plan from how hard each session felt. A review of 36 validation studies found the session-RPE method has “validity and good reliability” as a stand-alone training-load measure.13 A 2022 meta-analysis found that adjusting load by effort or bar speed (six studies) produced similar strength gains to fixed-percentage plans in trained lifters.14 Effort feedback is a sound method, but it has not been shown to be a better one than a fixed plan.
Fitness apps help, modestly
A 2021 meta-analysis of 28 trials with 7,454 people found apps and activity trackers added about 1,850 steps a day. Personalized interventions worked better.16 Lead author Liliana Laranjo, of the University of Sydney’s Westmead Applied Research Centre, and colleagues noted that longer studies are needed to show which features keep people engaged and active over the long term.16
Diet plus exercise beats exercise alone for weight loss
BetterMe’s case rests on combining workouts with meal plans. A meta-analysis of 8 trials found combined programs cut 6.29 kg more than exercise alone at 12 to 18 months. They also cut 1.72 kg more than diet alone at 12 months.17 If fat loss is your main goal, an app that covers food as well as training fits the evidence better.
Freeletics is the only one studied directly
A survey by Hertel and colleagues at the Technical University of Munich, covering 3,668 Freeletics users, found 4.57 injuries per 1,000 hours of training. That rate was lower in experienced users, and most injuries cleared within a week. Shoulders (29%) and knees (28%) were the most common sites.6 A 2024 content analysis found 15 behavior-change techniques in the app; goal setting, action planning, self-monitoring and social support were among the most common.18 PubMed returns no studies of BetterMe or Fitify.
Freeletics vs BetterMe: which is better?
Freeletics is better for training: an adaptive Coach, a real free tier, Editors’ Choice, and peer-reviewed data on its users. BetterMe is better if weight loss and habits matter more than the workouts, because it bundles meal plans and trackers. Read BetterMe’s renewal terms before you pay.1296
| Freeletics | BetterMe | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Bodyweight HIIT and strength | Weight loss and daily habits |
| Adapts to | Your post-workout feedback1 | Your sign-up quiz7 |
| Free tier | Yes, 34 workouts1 | Not described |
| Nutrition | Separate app or bundle1 | Built in7 |
| Regulator action | None found | UK ASA upheld a complaint in 202419 |
In June 2024 the UK Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against a BetterMe TikTok ad for a “28-day Calisthenic Challenge”. It ruled the ad “misleading” and said it “exaggerated the capability of the programme”.19 That is a ruling on one ad, not on the app’s workouts, but it is worth knowing before you trust a before-and-after promise.
Freeletics vs Fitify: which is better?
Choose Freeletics for harder bodyweight HIIT and structured strength plans, with Editors’ Choice and a clearly defined free tier (34 workouts). Choose Fitify for short sessions using home equipment, an AI Coach you can talk to, and one clear yearly price of $69.99. Both run on iPhone, Android and Apple Watch.135
| Freeletics | Fitify | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Harder bodyweight HIIT and strength | Short sessions with home equipment |
| Session length | 15–45 min1 | 15–25 min3 |
| Exercises | 700+1 | 900+3 |
| Coach | Adjusts from post-workout feedback14 | GPT-5 chat with voice and photos5 |
| Yearly price | Up to $79.99 (Training Coach1) | $69.993 |
| Free tier | 34 workouts1 | Selected workouts3 |
Freeletics is the more demanding app. Its workouts run up to 45 minutes, and in 2025 it added a strength journey with “a true emphasis on strength for the first time”.110 Fitify sessions are shorter, at 15 to 25 minutes, and it lists 10 kinds of equipment, from kettlebells to a pull-up bar.3
Fitify’s AI Coach is conversational: you can ask it questions, send photos, and ask for changes around an injury.5 The Freeletics Coach adjusts your plan mostly through the feedback you give after each workout.14
BetterMe vs Fitify: which is better?
Fitify is the better workout app: a 4.9 rating, one clear yearly price, a free tier and a GPT-5 AI Coach. BetterMe is the better all-in-one weight-loss app, with 4,000+ workouts, 20+ meal plans and habit trackers. Its price list is harder to read.2375
| Fitify | BetterMe | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Workouts | Weight loss, meal plans and habits |
| App Store rating | 4.9 from 12K3 | 4.7 from 713K2 |
| Library | 900+ exercises3 | 4,000+ workouts2 |

| Yearly price | $69.993 | $19.99–$29.99 listed as “Annual”2 |
| Free tier | Selected workouts3 | None described |
If you mainly want to train, Fitify gives you more control over the workout itself. If you want one app for workouts, food and habits, BetterMe covers more ground, and the diet-plus-exercise research backs that approach for weight loss.17
Which devices do Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify support?
All three run on iPhone, iPad and Android, connect to Apple Health, and have an Apple Watch app. Freeletics has the lowest requirement, iOS 17; BetterMe and Fitify need iOS 18. BetterMe’s Watch app covers step and water tracking plus walking and running workouts. Fitify also runs on Wear OS.12320

What changed in Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify in 2025 and 2026?
Freeletics became Decathlon’s official digital training partner in 2025, adding equipment and strength programs. Fitify moved its AI Coach to GPT-5 in August 2025. BetterMe renamed its app “Well-Being Coach” and added recovery, sleep and stress tracking to its Progress tab.2510
- Freeletics: Decathlon partnership with 17 new equipment options and 300+ new exercises, Workout Spaces, heart-rate zone charts from wearables, offline mode, and the Ultimate Strength Training Journey.10
- BetterMe: now “BetterMe Well-Being Coach” on the App Store, with a revamped Progress tab covering steps, recovery, sleep and stress.2
- Fitify: GPT-5 AI Coach with voice, photo feedback and injury modifications.5 Gym weight logs now feed the next workout.3
How do Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify compare with SensAI?
Freeletics, BetterMe and Fitify are workout libraries with a plan on top. SensAI is a conversational coach ($69.99/yr) that reads Apple Health, so sleep and overnight heart rate shape how hard it asks you to train. It runs on iPhone and Apple Watch only, with no Android, and has no meal plans.821
| App | Plan comes from | Yearly price | Free option | Android |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freeletics | Your feedback after each workout1 | Up to $79.99 (Training Coach1) | 34 workouts1 | Yes |
| BetterMe | Your sign-up quiz7 | $19.99–$29.99 listed as “Annual”2 | None described | Yes |
| Fitify | AI Coach and your logs35 | $69.993 | Selected workouts3 | Yes |
| SensAI | Conversation plus Apple Health data821 | $69.998 | 7-day trial8 | No |
Where these apps beat SensAI
All three run on Android, and SensAI does not.8 All three have far larger workout libraries: 700+ exercises in Freeletics, 900+ in Fitify and 4,000+ workouts in BetterMe, against SensAI’s 500+ exercises.1238 BetterMe includes meal plans, and Freeletics and Fitify both offer free workouts with no trial clock. SensAI also needs iOS 26 or later.8
Where SensAI is different
SensAI is a coach you talk to. You can tell it “I tweaked my shoulder - adjust my week” and it rewrites the plan.8 It reads Apple Health only: your watch or ring app writes to Apple Health, and SensAI reads from there.21
Apple Watch is the only device on SensAI’s list that shares HRV. Garmin’s Body Battery and WHOOP’s Recovery and Strain stay in their own apps.21 As SensAI’s Help Center puts it, “Sleep and overnight heart rate from your device shape how hard Coach asks you to push on a given day.”21 To see what your device shares, read how to connect a wearable to SensAI through Apple Health.

The bottom line
Freeletics is the strongest training app of the three: an adaptive Coach, a real free tier, Editors’ Choice and published research on its users. Fitify is the simplest to buy, at $69.99 a year with a GPT-5 Coach. BetterMe covers the most ground for weight loss, but read its renewal terms first.13596
All three are built on methods the research supports. Bodyweight training builds strength, short HIIT raises fitness, and effort feedback steers training as well as a fixed plan.111214 None of the three says it adjusts your plan to how you slept. If that matters to you, a coach that reads Apple Health, like SensAI, fits better.
