The logging flow itself is where Hevy earns its ratings. Last session’s weight and reps pre-fill each set, supersets and drop sets log natively instead of feeling bolted on, and the rest timer fires on its own. The app disappears into the workout — the highest compliment a logger can earn.

On top of the notebook sits a social feed. Follow your friends, see their PRs, let being seen keep you consistent — or fold the whole layer away and use Hevy as a private journal. It’s optional, which is the right call.

The scale claims depend on who’s counting: “over 10 million users” per Hevy’s App Store description, “14+ million athletes” per hevyapp.com.19 Either way, the ratings are hard to argue with — 4.9/5 across 80,000+ App Store reviews.1 The app comes from Hevy Studios S.L., a Barcelona company that launched it in 2019, and it runs everywhere: iOS, Android, Apple Watch, Wear OS, and the web, with true feature parity — rare in a category where Android is usually the neglected sibling.

The exercise database is a library of roughly 400 exercises6 — enough for almost any program, though far smaller than Fitbod’s.

Then there’s the new part. In February 2026, Hevy shipped Hevy Trainer, a Pro-only feature that generates a program from your goal, experience, and equipment, then progresses it by rule: hit the top of the prescribed rep range and next session’s weight bumps up.410

Be clear about what that is. It’s a progression rule — a thermostat, not a conversation. There’s no chat, no language model, no reasoning you can interrogate. Hevy, to its credit, doesn’t pretend otherwise.

What Fitbod Actually Is

Fitbod starts where Hevy stops: it writes the workout for you.

Tell it your equipment and your goal, and it generates today’s session — exercises, sets, reps, working weights, in plate-friendly numbers. Skip a day, switch gyms, land in a hotel with two dumbbells, and it re-routes. If Hevy is the notebook, Fitbod is the ghostwriter.

The engine is rules-based machine learning trained on your logged history — not an LLM, and there’s no conversation. It’s worth pinning that distinction down once, because “AI” gets stretched across both: apps like SensAI use an actual language model that reasons about your training, while Fitbod’s engine is statistical pattern-matching on workout logs — different technologies, and the difference matters later in this comparison.

The scale of that pattern-matching is Fitbod’s favorite talking point. Its algorithm page currently claims the engine is trained on 400 million+ logged workouts, and it maintains per-muscle recovery scores — a 0–100% freshness estimate for each muscle group that decides what you train today.5 Remember those percentages. There’s also a cold-start clause in the fine print: Fitbod says the algorithm needs “a few weeks of consistent use” before its model of you sharpens.5 Your first weeks run on a largely generic engine.

None of this is a takedown. Fitbod’s strengths are real: more than 1,600 exercises with HD demo videos, per Fitbod’s own comparison post,3 an Apple Editors’ Choice badge, a 4.8/5 rating across 278K reviews,7 and Garage Gym Reviews named it the Best AI Workout App of 2026.11

And the training it prescribes is defensible science. Dr. Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, CSCS, professor of exercise science at Lehman College CUNY, showed in his re-examination of the repetition continuum that muscle growth can be driven across a wide range of loading zones, provided sets are pushed close to failure.12 Which cuts both ways: it validates Fitbod’s varied rep schemes, and it also means the rep-precision a generator sells is less magical than it sounds. A wide range of prescriptions would have worked.

How Much Does Fitbod Cost in 2026?

Fitbod costs $15.99/month or $95.99/year (about $8/month effective) as of July 2026.2

That’s after a price hike — the previous tiers were $12.99/month and $79.99/year.7

If you’re going to subscribe at all, the annual plan is the only sane tier: twelve months at the monthly rate totals $191.88, roughly double the annual price for the identical product. The monthly plan exists to be a trial extension, not a way to actually own the app.

And say this part plainly, because Fitbod doesn’t lead with it: the 7-day free trial auto-renews. Forget to cancel by day seven and you’ve bought a subscription.

Is Fitbod Free?

Hevy, by contrast, offers unlimited workout logging free, forever. You’ll still find third-party articles claiming Fitbod gives you “3 free workouts” — that’s an outdated description of an older model, not how the app works in 2026.

What Does Hevy Cost in 2026?

Hevy is free for unlimited workout logging; Hevy Pro costs $2.99/month, $23.99/year, or $74.99 once for lifetime access.19

The free-tier fine print, honestly stated:

  • Unlimited logging, forever. No trial clock, no workout cap.
  • Caps on the extras: 4 routines, 7 custom exercises, and graph history that only looks back 3 months.6
  • CSV export is free — your training history is never hostage to a subscription.

The lifetime math takes one division: $74.99 ÷ $23.99 ≈ 3.1 years to break even versus paying annually. After that, the meter simply stops.

One caveat if generation is what you’re after: Hevy Trainer requires Pro. The free tier is a notebook, full stop.

The 5-Year Cost Math

The arithmetic is simple: Hevy’s lifetime is $74.99 once. Fitbod annual is $95.99 × 5 = $479.95 over five years. Fitbod monthly is $15.99 × 12 = $191.88 a year, × 5 = $959.40.

Two readouts jump off that table:

Five years of Fitbod on the annual plan costs 6.4x Hevy’s lifetime price ($479.95 ÷ $74.99 ≈ 6.4).

One footnote on the Hevy column: a lifetime license is a bet on the app’s longevity and on your own loyalty. Who Programs You Better — the Algorithm or You?

This is the real question hiding under the price tags. What does good programming even require?

Less than the apps imply. The evidence says the pillars are progressive overload and adequate volume, applied consistently. Schoenfeld’s dose-response meta-analysis put numbers on the volume side: each additional weekly set per muscle added about 0.37% to muscle-growth gains, and higher-volume programs beat lower-volume ones by 3.9% overall — a graded dose-response relationship.13 Do enough hard sets, add weight or reps over time, repeat for months. For a novice who doesn’t know what “enough hard sets” looks like, that’s a genuine upgrade over improvising — the algorithm will not let you bench three days a week and skip legs for a month, which is exactly the mistake self-programmed beginners make.

What Fitbod can’t do: adjust to the day you’re actually having. Its freshness model is computed from your logs — it has no idea you slept four hours or that your HRV cratered. The research term for what’s missing is autoregulation. Dr. Eric Helms, PhD, CSCS, a senior research fellow at Auckland University of Technology, demonstrated that lifters can effectively autoregulate training volume using RPE-based stops — an approach whose entire point is absorbing the day-to-day readiness variability that fixed prescriptions pretend doesn’t exist.14 An algorithm that only reads yesterday’s sets can’t do this.
